Well, some won't consider it cool, but I do! I found this knife at Knifeworks, and my first thought was, "Dang, they ripped off Darrel Ralph." I had wanted to purchase one of his excellent HTM-DDR knives. Then I clicked thelink and saw that according to the write up it was designed by Darrel. It is made by blackjack cutlery.

This, and the Gerber knife designed by Rick Hinderer, intrigue me, are they total shite? Or are they possibly a way to try out the ergonomics od a very expensive knife before we buy it?

What do you guys think? Thanks!

i don't know much about the Gerber, but if Hinderer designed it and has his name on it, it cant be too bad

Some of Gerber's stuff isn't the best, but I just ordered a Statesman, so I'm hoping that'll be good. It should be here in a few days. It looks nice, but we'll see how it performs.

My experience with Gerber is that I can usually get more bang for the buck from a different manufacturer. Their high end stuff seems to be well made, but it costs more than similar designs and similar quality from other manufacturers. Their low end stuff is cheap, as in "cheaply made" rather than as in "inexpensive".

But if you like the design, buy it.

I'm really more interrested in the BlackJack DDR, it is like 7$? I like the looks!

I like the handle shape on that Gerber/Hinderer. If only they would use a better blade steel on their knives, I would buy one...

I don't have any experience with Black Jack. My normal response for a $7 knife is "all goods worth price charged." Even Byrd knives, Spydercos made in China with Chinese alloys, are twice that price.

I've had a couple gerbers and I wasn't terribly impressed. However if you are seriously considering buying a real Hinderer or DR than it may be an alright way of getting a general feel for the knife. Don't expect it to feel just like the real thing, it may have slightly different ergonomics or hot spots because of a lack of good chamfering. I'd say if you have no way to feel either custom than itd be an ok way to get a like knife in hand. However I wouldn't recommend either as knives that you would be carrying but I don't think thats your intention.
