I Found The Real Bullet Knife!

I was digging around in some tool boxes and forgot I had this. It was made by my father in 1944 in New Guinea. You can barely make out the stamping from a center punch.

1944 ... .30-06 cartridge?
Very cool. Should make for an interesting letter opener. :)

I take it your dad removed the powder and primer?

Actually, from 1903 to mid 1906 the .30-03 was the standard US military cartridge.
The difference in the two is the bullet. The .30-03 used a flat base bullet. The .30-06 a spitzer for improved ballistic performance.
 
Thanks for that info...didn't know that...in fact never heard of it.:)
The .30-03 was short lived and little known.
The German (a Mauser design if memory serves) Spitzer bullet design was better, and the US "Stole" it for our use.
