the guy I gave it to that has been a good friend here in Oklahoma says to me, "well, now I can't let you give it to me, you know its bad luck to give away a knife right?" I'm like huh? He says, 'yeah, I have to give you something for it' and then he pulls out a dollar and insists I take it.

Anyone else ever heard this superstition? Where'd it start and how? I've given away my knives for a good long while now and then and this is the first I think I heard of it.

My Granddad always said to never give away a knife, or sell a dog. I guess it's just one of many old wives' tales. If anyone out there wants to give me a knife, I'll send my address!!! Bill.

ive heard of this too. its actually on wikipedia. "Possibly the most common belief is that if a knife is given as a gift, the relationship of the giver and recipient will be severed. Typically, something such as a small coin is exchanged for the gift, rendering payment." it doesnt say whence it came from but here u go

Well that explains why he selected the gold dollar then. :D

How funny. I never knew.

My Mom got me a very nice nickel and birds eye maple Lagouile for Christmas one year. She gave me a "paper" coin that came with the blade. There was also a little paper stating that giving a knife may "sever" the friendship. Perhaps it is a french custom? To me it seems kind of cool, espercially if the coin was something unique or uncommon like a Susan B Anthony or a foreign coin.

My mom also knew about this tradition. I gave her and my sister custom knives for gifts and she insisted on them "paying" me a quarter, for the symbolism, each time.

What's weirder is that we're Asian.

this is an oooooooooold superstition. your friend gave a dollar bill? if so, he vulnerable to the original superstition which was if someone gives you a knife, you must give them a.......coin.....or the friendship will end. beware the curse!

Here are some other knife superstitions:

A knife as a gift from a lover means that the love will soon end.
A knife placed under the bed during childbirth will ease the pain of labor.
It will cause a quarrel if knives are crossed at the table.
It is bad luck to close a pocket knife unless you were the one who opened it.

Now I've heard of the last one Morrow. All the others are new though. Glad I'm not superstitious.
