Well guys, time to stress shop safety again. I screwed up royally today, I had a tanto sideways in my knife vise, getting ready to engrave my signature on the knife. I bumped a hammer on the bench and knocked it to the
floor. When I stood up I brushed the point of the tanto with the back of my upper left arm. The resulting gash is 4 inches long and about 5/8 deep and took ten stitches to close. Man that tanto point is a real bi**h. Luckily I had just cleaned the blade with alcohol and it was very clean. But get this, when I told them at the ER that it was a knife wound, they wanted to call the police!! Man was I embarassed explaining everything. So be careful guys, those sharp pointy things can do some damage.

Thats nasty,

Hope it heals quick!!!

I had a similar but not as bloody experience with an important moral. I had a knife in a vise doing some file work. My wife called me for supper so I dropped everything and went in to eat (leaving the knife in the vise, point towards the door). after we ate the wife gave me a bag of garbage to take out through the garage. The rest is easy to figure out. Just a nice clean puncture.
I shudder every time I think about one of my kids running out into the garage. I Always remove knives from vises even to answer the phone, because I never know when I'll get back to it.

I haven't hurt myself like this yer, but the thought of it being a possibility never leaves my mind when I have a knife in the vise. If I bend over to pick something up off the floor I will duck walk out into the middle of the shop before straightening up! I worked in a couple of glass shops for several years, and you develope some very deeply ingrained habits like NEVER moving your hands or body with out looking first.and also NEVER EVER use your hand to push rubbish down in a full trash can.

I haven't had too many "run-ins" with knives, but I did drop my Ka Bar on my bare foot after sharpening it. Ow. When I use the vise, I have the blade pointing in toward the middle of the bench and not to the outside. that was the bench table protects me a little. Helps keep me in one piece.

fox creek, i learned the don't push debree away when i pushed away a broken glass bottle. they didn't LOOK sharp. i don't have to worry about people coming into the shop and getting hurt, but i put all my blades in a tool chest drawer anyway. lock your shop when you leave, so no one walks in and gets hurt, that's what i do.

The worse part is that the blade was parallel to the bench, edge in and I had placed a roll of paper towels over the point. That wicked tanto point went right through it and got me.

I am really sorry to hear about the mishap.

I hope you get well soon.

Two good things will come out of it...first, you will be more careful and wont have another accident for a while....and second, it sure wont be that bad again i suspect

I have always found that it feels better when it stops hurting!

I hope you have a speedy recovery...I always seem to do something again once the prior "something" is almost completely healed.

Jake I did the same thing at Chris Christman's house last December except I almost cut my finger off I had the blade in the vise and brought my right hand up and across the back side of the point I am glad the edge was up or I would be missing my middle finger. Also I felt like such a idiot in front of Chris and his wife Marti. He still reminds me about it every now and then.
I hope your Wound heals fast.
