Was playing around with my almost 9yr old Kershaw Shallot, and heard the assist spring snap! It's now a manual, and it sucks. So, it'll be going in for a new spring and a fluff-and-buff. Never had to send one in before, but this should be fairly routine. I have to say, after 8+ years, the ZDP-189 is some really good steel! Looking forward to getting this one back, it's my favorite assisted opener...

Maybe things have changed, but last time I broke a torsion bar on a Kershaw they didn't have me send the knife in, they just mailed me the part.

This one won't come apart for me, I'd rather have them do it than me screw it up. I don't even care if I have to pay, I've gotten more than my $80 worth out of it. It deserves a factory service, I think.

9 years with the same torsion bar. That might be some sort of record. Did you carry it every day or was it rotated with other knives?

I think that it's great that it broke when you were playing around with it... and yeah, that's a LONG time for that spring to last...
Nice knife; you've certainly had good luck with it...

I broke the torsion bar on a Brawler within 3 months. KAI sent me two within two weeks of request (even though I asked for only one).

Those older onion kershaw's ( plus a few others) can be hard to take apart. The back side of the pivot was round and if you didn't get it just right it would spin and you wouldn't be able to break the factory loctite. Been there done that. Have to get creative to get them apart!

So it wasnt just a 1840 but a composite blade zdp 1840 nice! They were ground much thinner than the s110v's and were real lazers! I know i enjoy mine when i carry it!

If you don't mind post up a pic!

Cheers,

Justin

Great to hear the torsion bar lasted that long! Sending it in will have them replace the bar, probably any screws that need replacing and if the pocket clip is all jacked up from carry, they'll replace that too. Oh, and they'll sharpen it for you as well.

You're gonna get an almost new knife back!

Good luck the shollot has been discontinued and uless they used the same torsion bar on other knives you are out of luck

I have one of those too! I love it! I've been carrying it for two or three years now.

Just getting to the point that it really needs a good resharpening now.

Yeah, I carried mine every day for eight years before rotating it out for a fixed blade. Mine is also dated Oct '08, and I bought it in November '08. Looking forward to getting it back in shape, it's a great knife, in my opinion, and the closest thing to a gentleman's folder that I am likely to be caught with...

Wow! Thats a long time!
I just HAVE to see a picture of its beauty marks.
What's the most abusive thing you've done with it?
Any bladeplay issues after all the use?

Pretty sure the torsion bar is the same along the many of the Onion designs. Should be the same as the Leek, Blur and a few others.

No pics, sorry, but I am a dinosaur. It's lucky that I can even tpye! That knife has opened literally thousands of boxes, quite a bit of fiberglass tape, the occasional nylon banding material, and cut or broken down hundreds of boxes. Cuts fishing line, ropes, twine, the occasional steak or pork chop if the house cutlery is lacking, or I am too lazy to walk to the drawer. It's gone fishing, camping, helped with car repairs, yard work, etc. Basically I use it as a knife, to cut stuff. And for all that, it has almost no wear-marks or scratches of any kind. The pocket clip has never come loose. Even the lettering looks new. That's why I want it back in action. It's the longest running EDC folder I've ever had. OK, the Kershaw logo at the rear of the handle scale is a little hard to read, that's where the heel of the hand rides to open it, but that really is all the visible wear. In my estimation, what it may lack in visual character is more than equaled by the performance. When I bought it, I had no intention of babying this thing, and I never have.

Bladeboss: Probably the most abusive things have been a few of those heavy copper staples, occasionally some Kevlar banding, and the aforementioned fiberglass tape. Everything else the ZDP-189 eats for breakfast. Impressive steel, but a little hard to sharpen, so I never let mine get really dull. And no blade play, either. I wouldn't be lying if I said that this particular Shallot is the best carry knife I've ever had.
