I helped a guy at work with a fundraiser and as a gesture of appreciation, he/his daughter(band fundraiser) got me a Buck Bones camo skeleten knife with tanto, semi-serrated blade. I really think it is a very very nice gesture and I like the frame of the Bones but the tanto semi-serrated blade doesnt do it for me at all. They left the gift slip in the thankyou note in case I already had one or I didnt like it. I am just not a fan of either tanto or semi serrated blades and esp both. Should I exchange it at Dicks for something else or keep it as the original gift. If ever "its the thought that counts" was true, it is in this case. I just cant get over the fact they gifted me. Whataya think.

I would exchange it for one I would like and enjoy. To do so honors the gift, in my mind. It wasn't handmade or a family heirloom; it was purchased for your enjoyment.

I personally would not change it. That would transfer the gift from a memorable and treasured knife, to just another possession. Perhaps it is just destiny that wants you to further experience tanto and serrated blades.

There's your answer, Fritz! ;) Get something you like, tell them about it, and thank them again! They'll be pleased to know you have something you'll actually carry and use, rather than something that ends up in the bottom of a drawer forgotten about.

I think I would maybe tend to lean this way myself.

Although... A.P.F. does make a good point as well :D

Maybe you should try a Tanto serrated blade ;)

Fritz, A good topic for discussion . I've watched your posts over the years and don't think your ready for a tanto or serrations . Someday maybe . Exchange it for a model you'll use and like . This will cause you to think fondly of those nice folks and perhaps do other benefits in the future . Wish you the best on this one . When the dust settles let us know which way you went . DM

In a way it's like buying a piece of photography equipment for a photographer, or painting or ceramic supplies for an artist or craftsman. The thought and intent is there, but if it doesn't hit the mark, it misses.

I think the givers of the gift would be glad to see that you exchanged it for something you would really like. It's very hard to anticipate what a person with a specialized interest like any of these, or yours, would want or need.

Get what's right for you.

Think about it... a spinning rod and reel for a fly fisherman... or vice-versa?

Well, as long as it is a Buck knife, it is all good. Good post Wolfdog.

man i've been in that spot with my wife on gifts. we've kinda made a few things off limits for gifts since they have to be "right" like the example Wolfdog made I can't mount a Nikon lens on my Canon bodies. and I can't feed my 44s w/45colt. so those gotta be right choices are off the table since they can't work.

but with Buck's (or Victorinox) whatever she gets me means something since she took the time and "appreciated" my hobby to pick something. so even if she got me a model I have no interest in I wouldn't swap it because a. she picked it out and her feeling good about that means more to me then getting the right model and b. it keeps her from 2nd guessing what i'd want and thus lead to just not trying to buy one for me!

so for me if its a gift from a person i'll likely keep in contact with and its just a matter of not what i'd want but not it won't work i keep it. if it's a business gift or a generic gift i won/got without a "person" attached to it i swap.

good (and timely) post

Thanks fella's. APF, good point,I personally have a very hard time changing a gift. I figger if someone had the consideration to get it for me, it holds great value and normally would not change. I think in this case though, since they left the reciept and ok'd a change out, they realize that they were shooting an arrow at a non-specific target. I think even though it goes against my nature, I will trade it for something-maybe that 110 gift tin or they may have a Quickfire which I have been eyeing up. DM you are right, I just dont like either tanto or serrated, good observations. Thanks to all for helping me make my mind up....for now.:p

Maybe it will grow on you or you will find a use for it. If you are a collector, consider it an addition of a style and technology to display or that might come in handy or someday become appealing to you.

Thats a point well taken and I've given it serious consideration. I just cant see me changing to a serrated liker, let alone lover. One thing that is a less important point is that it is Chinese made. I have 5-6 china knives and I dont have a single problem with their looks and abilities, but they are all designs and blades that I specifically like.(folders, slippies and liner lock)

:cool:You're a good guy Kevin:thumbup:,that being said go for the one you like best. That way you can use it and it won't become the proverbial FRUITCAKE :eek:I'm sure they intended to get you one you'd want to carry.Sure hope they have that Quickfire.:)

Thanks Tom:)

Here's what I'd do Kev. If it were me, I'd keep it. I'm pretty sure that you have plenty of EDC knives and although the Bare Bones may never be a real collectors item, it will have a special meaning to you.

I've been picking up a few of the imported Whittaker models because I like the anodised aluminum. They are pretty cool little knives actually and although I'll probably never carry one as an EDC, they are discontinued and now a part of Buck history. They are made in Taiwan which makes it a little better than if they were made on the mainland I suppose.

Just my 2 cents worth.:)

This is my opinion as well Kevin. Keep it and remember why they gave it to you.

You'll be strapped up with a 110 on the belt and a Vantage in your pocket most of the time anyway. :D

Keep it and use it...some. Maybe it will be a good reminder why you don't like a tanto blade and serrations and you won't ever spend your money on one!

I do hereby duly rescind and cancel my above post after further consideration and reading of posts subsequent to my original post ..... (have your lawyer contact my lawyer to make necessary adjustments!) :D ;)

Keep this one - heck, you've got enough user knives. Put this one on permanent display as a reminder of the kindness shown you by your co-worker and his daughter.

I would take it back and get what I like... I have stuff from years ago that I wish I would have taken back... Still have the tags on them or still in the box... ITE ...:eek::eek:
