Yesterday on the way to work, I stopped at one of the local Mart stores, and got my elk and deer tags. The store (not a W-Mart) has a decent selection of knives, from a few manufacturers.

I had thought for some time about looking at the Bucklite Max knives. I like a drop point blade for hunting, but really figured for the price point they sell at, the knife would be nothing spectacular...

As I was waiting in line, I spotted a Bucklite Max in the display case. It was the small version ( 7 1/4 inch o.a.l ), but that is fine with me, because I like my knives a little smaller.
After getting my tags, I had the girl get one out for me. I know some have said the small version is to small, but when I held it in hand, it is perfect for me. I have big hands, but I can still get all four fingers on the handle. I can't see much sense in having an extra couple of inches of handle hanging out of my hand.

It is actually very comfortable in hand. It was sharp out of the box. It has some jimping on the spine, but I would like to have some jimping further out towards the tip, because when I'm skinning, I choke up on the knife, and my finger is on the spine closer to the tip.
Its not a big deal though.
I was pleasantly surprised with the handle. I thought it was a smooth plastic, which didn't thrill me, but I was happy to see it is more of a rubbery material, and has some grip to it.

I'v never owned a nylon Buck sheath, and honestly thought they were just a cheap way to make a sheath.
Well, once again I was wrong :D It is well made, it looks good with the silver Buck logo on it, and it has a plastic insert, so the sheath won't get cut up from taking the knife in and out of the sheath.

I don't know how well the edge retention will be, but for under 20 bucks, this is a lot of knife. AND, it's stamped U.S.A on the blade

Sorry I don't have any pictures to post. My new phone is acting up, and it doesn't want to take pictures for some reason.

Would love to hear more about your experience with the new knife.

Like you, I was terribly underwhelmed at the Bucklite Max folders when I saw them. Looks cheap.

Then I got one of the Christmas tins last year. Wow. The little 482 felt great in hand. Super light. Used it backpacking for a bit and now have a 486 for more blade.

Funny seeing your post today. Just before I read it, I was corresponding with another forum member in email and remarked how surprised I've been by how much I like the Bucklite's handles.

I think they are one of the knives that needs to be seen in person, and held, to appreciate. I know I'm guilty of forming an opinion, just based on price. These days, there are some knives being offered for $20 or so, that really are good knives...
Granted, we aren't talking a knife with fancy scales, and a leather sheath, but for a basic knife, it is hard to be disappointed for the price.
In all honesty, even if the knife was closer to $40, it still wouldn't be a bad buy imho.

I finally got my phone camera to work, but it's not working very well. Photobucket isn't working well either, so these aren't great pictures, but they will work.

Thanx for the pics...for 20$ that might be a handy one for around the yard stuff or tossing in the glovebox of the vehicle blade

Yeah that will be a reliable tool and sturdy for hunting or other.

Absolutely. If they could make a knife similar to the 100 series style ( using the same handle material they already use ) , that is as comfortable in hand as this one is, I'll bet it would be a big seller. Possibly add upgraded steel too.
