My wife and I moved down to TN 6 months ago. I have been working as a self employed photographer for the last 7 years and have loved it. I have moved 3 times during this time. Needless to say I have gotten a little sick of building up my clients from nothing to something. Anyone that takes pride in their business knows that a steady stream of clients is not easy to just walk away from, and try and replicate it again and again.
So I have decided to give something else a try.....

Selling cars!

I just interviewed at a local honda dealer today, and needless to say I am excited at the potential of this type of work. I figure I can still shoot my photos on the side.

In the long run I guess this just means more ESEE knives are coming my way!

So.... Who needs a new car?

Good luck with the new endeavor! Sales didnt quite work out for me! Did it for 7 yrs, finally couldn t handle all the stress and pressure that comes with it. You will get out of it what you put into it!

congrats on the new job. a car sales men would not be my first choice but if it puts food on the table and keeps a roof over your head it's all good

just make sure you never put the camera down, you never know when that once in a life time photo will spring up

Congrats on your new job!!! They're few and far between right now.

Tell me about it! I have been looking for work in my field for several months now to no avail. Last week I expanded my search. I applied to over 12 jobs. The funny thing is that I was offered two jobs one day after the next! Two car dealers, both in the same parking lot!
I took this as a sign from the Man up above.

Congrats on the gig, and best of luck selling cars. My wife has an Accord and loves it. Honda is a good brand!

Take good care of your customers, and they will take good care of you.

Congrats on the new job brother.

Having just bought our first new car since we've been married, I'll give my .02.

The boss might not like it, but not playing people and not being pushy is what sells cars. Most people don't like that crap.

After doing lots of research for almost a year, my wife and I knew exactly what we wanted and exactly what we were expecting to pay. Went to dealership #1 and told them we'd be checking with another dealership, so this was their opportunity to give me the best price they could and get my business. Dealership #2 beat it without me hardly having to try. Similar sized dealerships, so apples to apples. Dealer #1 blew up my phone like a psycho ex-girlfriend for 3 days leaving messages asking if I was ready to buy. I said yes I was ready to buy 3 days ago at dealership #2 who gave me a better deal but I appreciate your time. He said "Fine, bye" and hung up on me. Boy he sure was nice when I had my checkbook in hand.

+1. You want to become a top salesman and have repeat business??? then be dead honest with your potential customer and DON'T push anything on them. Most people have a bad attitude the moment they deal with a car salesman becasue there are so many lies that happen on most car lots. Be honest and don't push and you will gain a stream of customers that will not go anywhere to buy a car.

Truth.

I worked in a video game department of a store when I was in my teens - and used to break sales records by just being honest and willing to help people.

There was a contest put on by sony and microsoft at the same time on who (what store/what employee) could sell more of their "next gen consoles" and at the time it was the ps2 and xbox. I tested both, picked one as having whatever reasons I thought it was best and honestly stated that when people asked which one, but I gave pros and cons of both and answered questions without pushing any warranties etc on top of it.

I won both of those contests, and scored 3 job offers to work in sales while I was still in high school - they were all dissapointed to find out I was 16 and couldn't travel for them at the time.

I ended up doing similar types of performance for services and hardware when they transfered me to work at a electronics store as a PC repair tech who sometimes did sales as well.

I just like helping people who need it, I look for the same thing elsewhere - I know pretty quickly if I'm going to mesh with a salesman.

Congrats on your new job! My accord is almost 12 years old and it's still running extremely well.

I have never had a good experience buying cars until i went to Carmax. They have my business for life unless something changes. Car sales guys everywhere i have ever been were horrible. So i can also say +1 to the not pushy thing and be honest.

Good luck on your new venture. Where in TN are you? That state has some really nice spots in it.

God bless,
Adam

What areas of photography do (or did) you specialize in? Advertising, industrial, sports . . . ?

I am a commercial photographer. I focused a large part of my work on portraits. Though I did product, advertising, and sports photography as well.

For fun I shot abandoned buildings in Detroit.

Thank you all for the good wishes and advise! I will take all the advise to heart, and do my best. I am not sure what I am getting my self into for sure, but I will work hard, put all I have into perfecting my new craft. After all this job is going to help my wife and I make it through....

congrats on the new job!

we just bought an odyssey last year and we love it. your a little lucky because, with honda's rep, most of the cars will really sell themselves. our salesman wasn't pushy at all. he kept a fair distance, waited for us to ask questions before answering them, let us really explore the vehicle and it's features, was honest, and made us comfortable that he was more on our side than the company's side. now, that may have all been some kind of front, but the bottom line is being respectful and letting the customer lead the dance. it works. remember, no one is really excited about spending all of their money on a new car for the next few years and they probably don't even want to see you coming with that big smile on your face. show them you are real and respect them and it will go a long way. like i said, honda's sell themselves, so you should be alright. ;)

congrats again, and good luck with it.
