Got a new old axe and thought I'd share some pictures.

I decided I wanted a new axe and started looking around on ebay at vintage axes. I found this old Plumb axe head and got it for $20. It's in great shape, has little to no rust and has a pretty nice patina. There are a few dings under the bit, probably where someone removed the handle but the dings are minor. Basically all it needed was a handle and a good sharpening. It took a real nice edge which I tried to photo. It's very sharp now!

I got a handle for it from home depot for about $15. I had to look through a few handles to find a good one but this one is straight and has nice grain. It had some kind of varnish on it so it took some sanding to get it off. I flamed it to add some character and put a couple coats of boiled linseed oil. I'm very happy with the out come and it should last for many years with proper care. It has a great feel to it.

These pictures aren't great but I guess they'll do.

very cool, kind of project that'd take me a couple of months to get finished and it looks like you wrapped it up better and quicker :) bet it was a lot of fun

congrats that's a nice old axe with a fine looking new handle

You can`t beat the old Plumb axes, I have several of them. Really like what you did with the handle, I torched the one on my Wetterlings, they look nice that way.

Looks nice!

I was thinking John would like the torched oak - and he beat me to it!

best

I like the torched look too,but I believe that's a Hickory handle there Andy, either way it looks good Ryan.
I assume you're going to make an edge cover for it so don't forget the pics if you do please.

Edit to add:thanks for reminding me I need to re-handle my axe.(chinese made, hardware store bought :o)

Thanks fellas. I think it will make a good axe and it didn't cost all that much. I did enjoy sharpening, hafting and making it mine. It seems to be made of good steel and took a nice edge. I'm not sure when I'll get and edge cover made but hopefully soon. I have it in the shop because it's so humid outside. I put it behind my work bench so it's out of the way. I go barefoot all the time around the house and shop and I'd sure hate to stump my toe on the razor sharp bit. :D

Thanks for reminding me. I have a couple of axes in my storage that need to be rehandled. Now you've given me the incentive to do it.
Nice work.
