I don't want to make this a steel debate.

I was in the market for the AUS 8 version of the Recon 1. I came across a combo edge at a gun show and it was good enough. I'm loving it more than I expected.

Now I'm in the market for an AUS 8 AK47 and having a really tough time digging one up. Do I need to worry about AK47 clones on eBay? Do you guys think they would mostly be marked XHP?

Any insight on how to track one of these down would be great.

If this is against the rules, go ahead and delete it and please accept my apology in advance.

I think it's tough finding AUS8 models now days, but still possible for sure, especially on the exchange.

If the price isn't too far off i'd grab an XHP model, absolutely fantastic upgrade to an already awesome knife.

Does XHP behave like other powdered steels? I think 30/35V is perfect for a smaller folder, but it can get a little chippy. I actually like how AUS 8 just rolls. It's easier for me to sharpen out. I play on giving the knife a good beating.

You won't have any chipping issues with Cold Steels XHP from the way they heat treat it, it's a very balanced steel between toughness, edge holding and great corrosion resistance. I've chopped hard branches with my Recon 1's in XHP (for test purposes) and done a fair bit of hard wood carving when sitting by the BBQ with ZERO chipping, it just slowly dulls off to a good working edge. XHP is very easy to sharpen also. You'll find it very much like S35VN, from my use it holds an edge a bit better than S35VN tho, nothing but good things to say about it.

There's a few on Ebay right now. I've only seen one fake on Ebay and it had the OD green handle and claimed it had XHP steel.
I had an AUS8 version and it shrugged off many a sound thrashings.

I have a near mint AK-47 AUS 8 with box.....never carried, just opened a dozen or so times. Putting on exchange soon. I can time it.....I can't send you a PM.....not sure if you can contact me.

What's the best way to go about it?

Go up to the Paid Subscriptions tab at the top of the page and get a basic membership. Only $10 for a year. Then you'll have private message privileges. It's well worth it, and it makes things much easier.
