I got an Opinel for Christmas!

This is a really great knife! It's small enough to sit in the change pocket of my jeans with enough poking out that it isn't concealed. The handle fits my hand very nicely. It looks like something out of an artist's kit! It's a much more usable blade than the tiny little one in my Micra, so I'd use it more. The funny thing is after a couple hours of using it on Christmas morning I went digging around for my small Twitch. The Twitch fit my change pocket better and flicked open with one hand, so I was kind of meh about the Opinel for a while.

I guess I just like the wooden handle and the classic styling of the knife. As a bonus, it's a really sheeple friendly little knife. For the last couple of months I was going back and forth about getting a gentleman's folder to carry because I'm getting back to putting on a suit for work and wanted a congruent knife, but this one has satisfied me on that note.

Once I packed the Twitch around for a little while I picked the Opinel back up and was really happy to have it. I have a #8 and have had a few others I gave away as gifts, but I think this one's going to be my go-to for when I dress for work.

On a side note, I finally got around to picking up a box cutter. Didn't use it at all for cutting boxes as it's way too bulky to carry around in my pocket. I'll probably use it for drywall and breaking down boxes when I get around to breaking down the boxes in the basement.

Also picked up a Cold Steel spike hawk for when I go cut firewood. Not for any big chopping, but for small limbs and rolling wood with the spike. Lots of new sharp things in the last month and they all make me happy.

I got an Opinel for Christmas as well, a #7 with the "apple green" handles. Didn't get it for use though, I just asked for it cause I liked the color.

You really can't go wrong with the Opinels. They take an awesome edge and while edge retention isn't fantastic it really doesn't need to be - it takes all of about 30 seconds to bring them back up to scary sharp. I really like the designs and as you said they're very inoffensive for the non knife person. I own several. My favourite is probably the No.8 gardening knife in stainless, although I love my (now quite worn and patina'd) No.6 in carbon.

I ordered a No.7 carbon for myself and got it the day after Christmas. It's my first Opinel and I will probably add a few others just to add to the collection. I was surprised that it came from the factory with a pretty good burr down the whole edge and no bevel at all. A few minutes with a ceramic stone soon had a razor sharp edge on it though, and I'm a beginner when it comes to knife sharpening. I was surprised how quickly and easily it took a fine edge.

I had only one Opinel until today when this Opinel Knives Stainless Steel 10 Knife Set (No. 2 to No. 12) Beechwood Handles arrived as a gift in a nice wooden presentation box (I was told it was coming for the holidays since I had hinted that I liked it but wasn't around to pick it up)! Wow! I don't think they make them any more. I'll take my own picture next to my old Opinel Slim No. 8 Ebony Handle in a couple of days.

I love my No.8 in carbone! I've been using it almost exclusively for food duty and it has not let me down. Also, the steel is starting to patina very slowly. I'm looking forward to seeing all the character this blade can get. I wasn't a believer till I got one earlier this year (thanks Lionesser!!!)

Congrats on your gift! I've got a #7. So simple, yet so beautifully designed. They're absolutely fantastic slicers (and if you aren't careful you could take off a good chunk of your finger xD). I absolutely LOVE Opinel knives!
