on Friday, i was on the Spyderco website, checking out the Dodo page in the online catalog, i have a kind of morbid curiosity as to when the Dodo supply will dry up, don't get me wrong, i hope the Dodo inventory hangs around for a while, i love my blue SE Dodo....

for the last month or so, the only Dodo available on the Spyderco website has been the SpyderEdge version, but yesterday, when i checked, *both* Dodo's had a selection button next to them, it appeared that the PE Dodo was back in stock....

i had originally wanted the PE version, but by the time i got around to ordering it, it was out of stock, so i got the SE version instead....

i decided to take the chance, i ordered the PE Dodo, and the order processed normally, and when the Dodo page reloaded, the PE version was once again out of stock...

a few hours later, i got an e-mail saying that my order has been shipped, so it looks like i may have just purchased the *last* PE Dodo on the Spyderco website....

Woohoo!, the first time i've actually gotten lucky with an online purchase :)

since this Dodo is more than likely the last of it's species, it'll probably be the only Spydie i *don't* actually use, as it will kinda' be a collectors item....

Can't wait for this one....

Gratz. The Spyderco Dodo is the best knife no one will ever use. I know samuraidave was pretty impressed after he held my black dodo last thursday. It really is an amazing feeling knife.

Congratulations (lucky bastid)

I hope the handle is brought back (if not the whole thing).

Same handle, different blade, and maybe updated lock, might appeal to more people.

Youse guys needs to stop talkin' 'bout this Dodo thing... gettin' me all interested.

Nice score, keep it for the collection with all the shipping papers and whatnot, and if you really feel the need to use it try and find a used one on ebay.

Pretty cool buy, but just use it man!

I highly doubt "the last Dodo on the Spyderco website" will really make it a collectors item. The Dodo is great because it is a great user. The same goes for pretty much all (even limited addition or rare) Spydercos. If you want a collectors item, get an art knife from a world-renowned maker. The Dodo is an ugly, but fantastic, user. As a collectors item, a Dodo (even the last one of the Spyderco site) is nothing special.

At least that is how I see it. Since you already have another Dodo, if you feel you want to keep this one mint, do it. It was your money. But consider my side before you resign your Dodo to the display case.

My PE Dodo is here!, YAAY!

Appearance-wise, comparing my PE Dodo to my SE Dodo, the SE just looks....meaner, far more aggresive, i daresay, it looks (to the uninitiated sheeple) "scarier"

the PE Dodo on the other hand, just looks.....funny, it's the far less "threatening" appearing of the two....

comparing the two side by side, the Reverse-S belly curve is less pronounced on the SE, it almost looks like a straight edge, the downturned point is also less pronounced and less "pointy" than the PE, the PE's belly is very pronounced, and it has a nice, sharp, pointy "splinter picker" tip

performing my "Cut-Off" competition between the knives i have on me right now on the 8.75" box the Dodo shipped in, the knives performed as following;

Dodo PE; 6.5", a decent amount of drag and resistance while cutting, however the cut was smooth and the knife never bound or got stuck, nice clean edges, very slight bending of the outside edge of the cardboard
Dodo SE; 8.5", less resistance during the cut, and amazingly enough, a *smoother* feeling cut, despite the serrations, minor bending of the outside edge of the cardboard....
Cricket SS PE; 8.0", exceptionally clean cut, very little resistance, *no* bending of the cardboard edges, the thin profile of the blade and the VG-10 steel are an excellent combination, in *every* Cut-Off test i perform, the "lowly" little Cricket *always* finishes in the top 3, the Cricket is an *exceptional* little blade
Jester SE; 4.0" lots of drag, very ragged edges and a lot of bending
Benchmade Benchmite II; 6.5", however, it had the most drag of the knives tested and i could feel it hanging slightly on the corrugations in the box
Leatherman Blast; 5.75", lots of drag, slowdown on the corrugations and a lot of bending....

the results of *today's* cut-off test....
First Place with an 8.5" cut, the SpyderEdge Dodo, this little beaut eats boxes for lunch...
Second Place with an 8.0" cut, the PlainEdge Cricket
Third Place with a 6.5" cut, the PlainEdge Dodo
Fourth Place with a with a 6.5" cut; the Benchmade Benchmite II
Fifth Place with a 5.75 cut; the Leatherman Blast

Honorable Mention; the Spyderco Jester with a 4.0" cut

Hair, now that i have the PE Dodo in my hand, i can see your point about just *using* it, after all, this Dodo is (putting on Nomex flame-resistant suit) nothing "special", heck, it's not even a Collectors Club model, just a plain, vanilla PE Dodo, just looking at it, you'd never *know* it was the last one on the Spyderco website....

it'd be a tragedy to resign such a wonderful knife, designed to be *used* to the life of a "shelf queen", Eric and Sal designed their tools to be *used* after all, not to sit on a shelf....

to Quote Sal Glesser (probably badly paraphrased);
"We'd rather the knife be in your pocket because it *works* better, rather than on display because it "looks" better....

over at my local sporting goods shop, they have some really nice pre-owned Case slipjoints, the previous owner was a collector, and these slippies are *mint*, no fingerprints, factory edges, the only way you could tell they're pre-owned was the fact the *original* boxes had light corner wear, these Case slippies are in *mint* condition, brass bolsters, jigged bone scales, all metal parts gleaming and brand new, scales in 100% new condition....

it made me sad to see such fine examples of workmanship gathering dust, yet i'd feel guilty if i bought one and used it, although.......

Congratz Mac.

It always seemed to me that naming a knife after an extinct bird was kind of a self-fulfilling prophesy. Like naming your kid Jeeves and expect him to become anything but a butler.
