I got the Respect today, I am not 100% on this sheath.

So as the title says I got the Respect. It came in a beautiful pistol case with plush innards and a woven Spyderco logo, the knife has superlative fit and finish for a production knife with a solid feel, however the sheath (for as nice as it is) doesn't secure the knife in any way.

What I'm saying is the knife slides in but easily whips right back out as if on ice. If I were to put the blade in an jump or run it would pop out, and if it were upside down tumble down. Also, if I latch it up, the blade isn't secure and can fly right out as the leather supplies no additional resistance. Is this the norm or should I really really pull on that leather to go over the guard to secure the knife, as right now it doesn't reach.

Do you see what I mean? Ss the leather strap not supposed to secure the knife and is the knife supposed to have no resistance when in the sheath?

Do what Sal says but I'm not loving the sheath either because the opening in the tab will eventully widen w/use and eventually become so loose that it will be all but useless, in which case I'd in remove the post and replace the works w/a snap.

Quite normal for a sheath of that kind. The leather retention strap needs to go over the guard. It will be tight at first, but will stretch.

With these remarks in toe I have an update:
Look at my first post, that was as far as the knife was entering the sheath. I felt the sheath as if testing a fit of a shoe, and though that the entirety of the sheath had been filled as Japanese swords' scabbard (saya) have a bunch of wood in the end so too did this have leather. This assumption was erroneous, as you can see what had been happening in the following image:

Notice that after I wiggled the knife in the sheath over and over it went in further:

With that the leather strap could be affixed and the knife would be snug and not rock loose:

Two things I want to make known. First my photos do not give example to how nice the fasteners are on the scales. They have very very good finish. The other thing is that the knife is a mess from me man-handling it in testing so don't think the steel is messy in presentation in any way from Spyderco themselves.

Also, Sal, do you see the first image in this post? I know that an early invention of yours was one of those handy men that could clip on to something and hang like a monkey, instead of sit like this Taiwanese one. If you had any of them around still I'd buy one from you. Also I wouldn't expect the designer of the knife to respond, thanks for your help.

The sheath will break in with more use. Mine draws and inserts easily now.
Same, but a bit too easily. Maybe I can shim and glue some felt to make it seize more without the thong on there.

Yeah I'm afraid of that. I might have to have a sheath made or make it so friggin tight I don't need it at all, but to the design's credit most people don't use their knives day in day out so it wasn't built costly to withstand years of use.

Sorry Legs. I like my sheath loose. In fact I cut off the strap. I don't plan on tumbling or hanging upside down, but I do need to easily access the knife. It sits under my shirt. Differences in preference I guess. I don't use a strap on a holster either. I guess you could have one made, but remember, too tight in my opinion, requires much more effort to access the knife. Sometimes even 2 hands?

It makes sense you say that, and I should have realized it . That Understated Trademark Hole and the washers that's in the folders allow you to deploy the blade so fast the naked eye can barely catch it, and it's even as fast as automatic knives with enough grip power of the user. That design of course is intentional, so too is the sheath on the Respect. It might have been designed to be whipped out as fast as humanly possible.

With that said I have decided to experiment with magnetic sheets to give resistance, and paint the spyder gold as it is on the top dollar pouch.

Magnets, that's a good idea. Maybe a couple strong button magnets will give you the sort of effect you're looking for!

However...magnets: how do they work?

I tried the magnets out. Lots on the back give it slight resistance but not enough for running. Two on the thong and the front face give a perfect amount, and you can even hold the knife upside down! The issue is when you whip the knife out it knocks your hand, that and there's not a nice way to put them on. I experimented all with electrical tape to try it before gluing or sewing an add-on.

I know it's not the same thing but I never had a problem removing a gun from a triple retention holster single handed.

LOL! ;)
