Yup, I got bored/tired of waiting for the "powers that be" to "release the tweeners." So, i organized a quick impromptu orgy of choppers & other things. :D Nothing scientific of course, but some things were learned & most of all I had FUN !!! :D I have been a little grumpy lately, or so i've been told. :D I now have 3 safe queens, but the rest are users. Blades used: BK4, BK9, BK11, BK13, BK14, Condor Boomslang, Ontario SP8, Cold Steel Trail Master, Tops Alaskan Harpoon. Some have been modified, others have not. One thing i can assure you of, is that i wailed on them REAL good. Broke 1 baton stick & almost the 2nd one too.

Those are the first 3 contestants. "The KING", "The Boomslang" & The New Kid in Town, "The BK4 Machax" They posed well together. :D

The Slang was first up. It batoned really well. Did not transfer any vibrations to the handle---UNTIL i had to baton close to the handle or even on the handle. OUCH ! But in all fairness, every knife that i have ever batoned close to or on the handle has done that. Sometimes it is necessary when the log is wide, or i take too big of a bite of it, with the knife.

Next up is the new kid in town, the BK4 Machax. This is an interesting & unique blade to me. That is NOT a bad thing at all. Not quite knife, not quite machete, not quite axe. I learned that, if it does not split completely, quickly, the handle may hit the ground or surface first. That happened to me today. In all fairness though, the wood was not real dried. I had to move it so the handle was over the edge of the table to get a complete split. No big deal to me, just an observation.

Because the log was so wide, or because i took too big of a bite of it with the BK4, i only had the tip sticking out. It chewed up the baton pretty quick. It actually broke it, so on to baton #2. There was also a nasty twist in the log, which twisted the BK4's blade & the BK9's as well. I forgot to take pics of that---more on that later. Both blades went back to where they are supposed to be and are nice and straight now. I think that is a testament to a good heat treat. :D

BK9. Last up is "The King". That is an appropriate name for this blade. Yes, i voided the shit outta the warranty. Don't care. It is mine & modded the way i want. Not pretty either---but oh-so-functional ! This knife just friggin ROCKS, period. It LOOKS big, but does not FEEL big in hand. Wish i had a scale to be sure. Boomslang feels MUCH heavier in hand. I know, i know, it IS bigger, so it SHOULD be heavier. But, it seems to me (& i ain't no man of great physical fitness either) that i could swing the BK9 all day with no issues (actually i have, for deer season, clearing trails & shooting lanes), while the Slang' lets you know it's heavy or lets you know just how out of shape you are ----not sure which. I have used the Slang' for 1/2 a day clearing trails & my arm knew it. Bk9 is also much quicker in hand, i.e. faster BECAUSE of its lighter weight. Yet the BK9 holds its own in every aspect.

A little bit of feather sticking. God i LOVE the choil i put on the BK9 !!!

100_1360.jpg

Same with BK4.

100_1361.jpg

Same with the Slang'.

So, next was the chop depth test. Again---not scientific, but real world. The BK9 seemed to go deeper.

100_1363.jpg

So, then i dug around some more in my Rubber Maid of knives container, because i had a little more time to kill. I came out with a Cold Steel Trail Master & my VERY well liked Ontario Spec-Plus SP8 Machete.

100_1367.jpg

I wanted one of these for the longest time. Haters gonna hate, I know,:D but in my defense this was purchased in my PRE-BECKER years. I got this sucker for $75 brand new---yeah buddy !!! Or---so i thought. Then 2 weeks later, they put them on closeout for $35, yup $35. I bought another one for my daughter. :D I wailed on this one too, even on the tip. It held its own. It performed very well.

100_1368.jpg

It sunk in about average with one chop too. Not too shabby.

This is the SP8. 1/4" thick. I REALLY like this thing. It is unique & different, like the BK4. It chops like an animal, has a notch big enough to get 2 fingers in-kinda like a choil, for doing little things. The stock saw on top was a friggin joke !!! One day, last summer, I looked at it for a while, himmed & hawwed, looked at it some more. Then i looked at my Dremel 4000 & all of the accessories for it. Himmed & hawwed some more, then i made a plan & put it into action. First, i sharpened the tips of the notches real good & tried it. MUCH better, but still not there. Himmed & hawwed some more & more looking. Plan B was made & put into action. The saw kept clogging up in a stroke or 2 (:jerkit: pervert !!!) :D So, i used the cut-off wheel & made some angled cuts into the now sharpened factory teeth. BINGO-that did it. Works excellent now, at least with the wood i have tried it on. Not sure about softer woods though. Also, it does tear up the baton pretty good too.

100_1375.jpg

what you see here is the groove from 10 forward & 10 backwards cuts.

100_1374.jpg

It also chops well with one chop.

Next up for testing, was the BK11, BK13, BK14. Yup, i modified these too. Work excellent. I wanted to see just how capable they were. I have no doubts now. I wailed on these little suckers but good. They took it all, with the same baton i used on the large knives. I am impressed again.

Next up is my 12" Ontario machete. I modded it heavily. Bowie tip, 2 finger choil, jimping, handle mods. Now---remember the Nasty Twist in the wood i talked about earlier ?

100_1364.jpg

Look closely at the tip. I thought it was a gonner for sure. It twisted up BAD !

100_1365.jpg

A shot of after i batoned the thin Ontario 12" machete all the way through the log.
100_1366.jpg

And finally, the after shot of the machete blade. Straight again ! I guess that means good heat treat again, not sure though.

A few shots of the sheaths.

I also got the Tops Alaskan Harpoon out for a few minutes. I like this thing. vBELOWv

100_1381.jpg

Almost forgot---here is a pic of the BK9 inside the BK4 sheath. It fit perfectly. NOTE worth mentioning though, i realized that while i LOVE drop/swivel sheaths, when carrying the BK4, it will not swivel while the snaps are snapped around the handle. It kinda becomes stationary.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, I have learned a few things. I have pretty good taste in user blades as i have broke none yet. Ontarios blades seem to work much better after you fix the sharpness, even-ness of the grind & make the saw actually work. The Boomslang is an awesome knife after you change the grind/soften it. CS Trail Master holds its own. But the BK&T blades are my favorites. There is one for every occasion. They need nothing done to the blade out of the box for it to chop & cut well. They don't make you pay for a sheath you won't like.

Ethan Becker---once again, you impress me !!! :D It seems, that no matter how many times i test my blades (& i have a few), yours seem to always come out on top. They are Made in America, reasonably priced, no fluff, & can hang with any blade out there, many of which cost MUCH more ! I am proud to own your product & recommend it to everyone. :D

Just looked for the title but got lost in the pictures. Really enjoyed that. Wish I was there. Thanks for the pics!!

I would actually like to sell knives when i retire from my current job. I want to know what works & why & whats good & whats not. I can't sell someone something if i don't believe in it myself. Field testing i guess you would call it.

Nice, I think I need to get some bigger blades. 9, 4, 7, 10, 12, 6, 1, and some not-Becker to pit them against!

I thought u were supposed to be tired AFTER the orgy? not before?

LOL...great chopping job(s)! Nice collection of steel. I love how ur whaling away with ''deadly weapons'' and ur neighbor(?) is calmly gardening away like nothing is happening. U must do it enuff that it's considered ''normal'' in ur neighborhood lol

Yeah, he knows i am a "blade person". He was like, WTH, the first time though. I didn't even notice he was in there, LOL !

This is an epic, award-winning thread. Great plan, great photos, awesome toys. Any thread that makes me want to buy something new (in this case, the Boomslang) is a win in my book. You should give yourself a pat on the back for epic-thread-product, sir!

Thanks, you are too kind.

But in reality, we are just end users of a product, designed by a much more experienced person---the designer Ethan Becker, etc.. etc... . Those are the people who are award winners, IMHO.

But thanks again.

IHNFI where they went. I am no computer expert. They were there. Maybe YOU failed---by not seeing it & reading it sooner ?

This is one of the reasons I strongly recommend using Flickr. Pics don't disappear after a few days, and they don't get shut down from too much use.
