Yup, I got bored/tired of waiting for the "powers that be" to "release the tweeners." So, i organized a quick impromptu orgy of choppers & other things.
Nothing scientific of course, but some things were learned & most of all I had FUN !!!
I have been a little grumpy lately, or so i've been told.
I now have 3 safe queens, but the rest are users. Blades used: BK4, BK9, BK11, BK13, BK14, Condor Boomslang, Ontario SP8, Cold Steel Trail Master, Tops Alaskan Harpoon. Some have been modified, others have not. One thing i can assure you of, is that i wailed on them REAL good. Broke 1 baton stick & almost the 2nd one too.
Those are the first 3 contestants. "The KING", "The Boomslang" & The New Kid in Town, "The BK4 Machax" They posed well together.
The Slang was first up. It batoned really well. Did not transfer any vibrations to the handle---UNTIL i had to baton close to the handle or even on the handle. OUCH ! But in all fairness, every knife that i have ever batoned close to or on the handle has done that. Sometimes it is necessary when the log is wide, or i take too big of a bite of it, with the knife.
Next up is the new kid in town, the BK4 Machax. This is an interesting & unique blade to me. That is NOT a bad thing at all. Not quite knife, not quite machete, not quite axe. I learned that, if it does not split completely, quickly, the handle may hit the ground or surface first. That happened to me today. In all fairness though, the wood was not real dried. I had to move it so the handle was over the edge of the table to get a complete split. No big deal to me, just an observation.
Because the log was so wide, or because i took too big of a bite of it with the BK4, i only had the tip sticking out. It chewed up the baton pretty quick. It actually broke it, so on to baton #2. There was also a nasty twist in the log, which twisted the BK4's blade & the BK9's as well. I forgot to take pics of that---more on that later. Both blades went back to where they are supposed to be and are nice and straight now. I think that is a testament to a good heat treat.
BK9. Last up is "The King". That is an appropriate name for this blade. Yes, i voided the shit outta the warranty. Don't care. It is mine & modded the way i want. Not pretty either---but oh-so-functional ! This knife just friggin ROCKS, period. It LOOKS big, but does not FEEL big in hand. Wish i had a scale to be sure. Boomslang feels MUCH heavier in hand. I know, i know, it IS bigger, so it SHOULD be heavier. But, it seems to me (& i ain't no man of great physical fitness either) that i could swing the BK9 all day with no issues (actually i have, for deer season, clearing trails & shooting lanes), while the Slang' lets you know it's heavy or lets you know just how out of shape you are ----not sure which. I have used the Slang' for 1/2 a day clearing trails & my arm knew it. Bk9 is also much quicker in hand, i.e. faster BECAUSE of its lighter weight. Yet the BK9 holds its own in every aspect.
A little bit of feather sticking. God i LOVE the choil i put on the BK9 !!!
Same with BK4.
Same with the Slang'.
