Hi all. Just wanted to share my experience this week. I came to Louisiana for a week to visit my dad. While I was home I was prowling the Internet knife vendors when I noticed that one of them, knifeworks, is located about an hour from my dads house. So of course I drove over there and spent a couple of hours playing with every spyderco that's ever looked interesting to me on the Internet. It was awesome! So I thought since I finally got to play with everything at once I would share some of my favorites.

1. The Caly 3.5- this is probably the best feeling edc spyderco I've ever touched. Ergonomics are as good as any knife I have ever held. The knife is very compact for such a large blade. The caly exceeded all my expectations! I still prefer my pm2 as I believe it is a heavier duty knife, but were I in the market for a spyderco edc, the caly would be at the top of my list!

2. The techno- this knife is a little beast! Amazingly solid and well made for something so small. It is probably not something I would have a need for but it's got an easy to understand philosophy. Tough, well made knife in a small package!

3. The spyderco nishijin R- this is a knife that always looked neat to me but I never hear much about. It's a cool knife. Yes the handle is a bit slick, but the ergos are so good I don't think that's a big deal. The only complaint I had with the knife was the jimping on the choil was a bit aggressive for me...but that's just a personal taste thing. I think it is a great knife that's worth a look.

4. Chokwe- this is an awesome knife! Built very solid. Probably had the nicest f&f of any of the knives I looked at. I always thought the blade shape looked a bit odd, but after handling it, I think it would make a great edc/utility knife. I might have actually bought this one, but no lanyard hole is a deal breaker for me. This is an amazing knife though, and I think it's been discontinued, so you better hurry if you want one.

5. The chaparral titanium- wow! This knife never really caught my eye on the Internet, but you have to see this one in person to appreciate it! Gorgeous! This one I was sorely tempted to buy for my father who carries more of the "gentlemens folder" type knives than I do. The chaparral is one of the most beautiful and comfortable folders I have ever seen.

There were a couple of knives I saw that i loked more online than in person. One was the stretch. So many folks love this knife and I'm sure it's great, but I dunno, the blade shape just didnt do it for me...I will say that the ergos are outstanding and im sure its a beast in actual use. The cricket was another one. A really neat little package but the knife just didnt fit my hand right.

Ok, that's enough out of me. Just thought I would share some thoughts since I was lucky enough to go see all these knives in one spot.

P.S. I handled a couple of "other brands"...some of them big with flippers, others with fancy locks and deep bevels. meh, just not my cup of tea. It was enough to convince me that I'm a spyderco fan for sure.

Nice review on these knives & KW is great to deal with online. If I get back in that area again, I'll certainly look them up to see the store. I don't have a local vendor with that type of selection here to look at, and there are very few Spydercos you can hold.

how different does the GB and the stretch if i may ask? i was sure they look the same (modified drop point)

Thanks for the info about the knives and the location. I'm in central MS, and I didn't even know they were so close to me (about 2.5 hours). I might have to make it over there some time. I don't think there's anything similar close by. I went to Smokey Mountain Knife Works in TN this summer. I could have spent two days there, however I only had a few hours to spare. I think I put my hands on most of the knives I've been seeing online for years, lol. Like a kid in a candy store.

While the blade shapes are similar, they're quite different knives. The GB is beefier in just about every way. The Stretch is probably the most stout and tough of the FRN models, but you only need to hold a GB to know that it's a serious work knife. The ergos are slightly different, too. Both knives allow you to really choke up on the blade to do finer carving work, but where the GB has very subdued curves, the Stretch really locks your hand onto the handle. Lastly, the M4 steel of the GB is a great working steel, even though it isn't stainless. Both of these knives are always in my top 5 recommended Spydies.

Wish I had something like that close to me!!! Neat opportunity while visiting your dad, I'm always on the lookout for places in the areas I visit.

Edit: oops, was trying to respond to 762cal's post.

Yes, they are very similar. The stretch seems to have a bit more pronounced hump where the spydie hole is and a bit more curve in the spine. The bevel on the GB changes the look a lot too. I don't know, just looking at them side by side I found the overall design of the GB a bit "prettier". However, "pretty" is usually way down my list when looking at a knife. Bottom line is I already own the GB and like it so the stretch wasnt really calling to me. But like I said, it's a really solid and comfortable knife. Probably a great user.

You should go for sure. It's a great shop. It was really kind of heartwarming to visit the place. It's everything a small American business should be! The owner, roger, was there and took me on a little mini tour. His wife and kid work there, so it's a real family business. I think he told me they sell more knives than any shop in the world! I know they have a massive amount of inventory. Several million dollars. Check it out man, it's worth the drive!

Have you seen the virtual tour video Roger put on-line? Talk about inventory, WOW! I have a Caly 3.5 and Chokwe, great knives. Seriously considering the Techno and the R too. I've dealt with them on several occasions and they are a great bunch. Was particularly pleased with my score from the inventory clean-up sale they had a while back (2 Lum Tanto folders and 2 BM Gravitators).

That video was jaw dropping! I love KWs, and I've certainly given them a lot of business! :D Ha. That's great that you were able visit and play with knives.
