MAN!!

So, after noting the sudden surge in my joints swelling up and staying swollen, I finally let my doctor talk me into taking Allopurinol for my Gout. I've had Gout for going on fifteen years, have had everyone and Jesus take their turn poking, pinching, prodding and drawing their dram of blood from me. Nobody can pinpoint a reason WHY I have gout, other than the traditional favourites--"Well, you're about thirty pounds overweight and you've had some breaks. I guess you must be genetically predisposed to it."

Funny...no one in my family has ever had Gout. I have friends that are FAR heavier than me, and THEY don't get it. I guess I must just be "lucky." Go me.

Anyway, so I started on Allopurinol, and was braced for side effects. I'd done my due diligence and read up on how the first month or so would be a real blast and how it MIGHT cause kidney stones if you don't keep uber-hydrated. But little did I suspect...

Friday, I woke up feeling like I'd been thrown under the BUS!! I had acute attacks in my right big toe and ankle, my right knee, my left index-finger knuckle, and my left shoulder. GAHHHH!!! So, on the advice of my doc, I laid off the Allopurinol and switched to my old buddy, Colchicine. How I hate it. Been riding the toilet all night, dumping uric acid and feeling miserable. At least the Indocine seems to be keeping the worst of the pain at bay...now, if I can just keep from puking while I go to work. Thank the Gods I have inservice this week!

Everyone I talked to said that, once you're past that first month, it's great. Take moderate care of yourself, eat rationally, and you can pretty much kiss Gout good-bye. From where I sit, it seems like a distant dream. Anybody got anything to help me get through this month of HELL?

Sorry to hear it. I can't take the colchecine. It just makes me too sick. I've been lucky with the Indocine, though, it usually only takes 3 days to get me back in shape. That's a little longer than the colchecine takes.

Depending on whether you decide to go back on the allipurinol, I've found that by keeping a bottle of indocine handy, and starting on it at the first sign of trouble, you can avoid the worst of it.

Threre isn't any real reason I don't use the allipurinol except for the fact that I"m bad about taking daily medicine, so hopefully, it will work for you in the long run.
