This is not a slam but an honest question; with all the fantastic things that you can attach to a knife blade, what is the deal on Koa? What are the attributes that make it (at least on this page) so wonderful.
No, I've not seen it up close and in my hands (at least I didn't know if it was Koa)but I have handled many exotic woods (inlays, schnabbels, forend tips, pistol grips, etc) and I honestly have not heard of Koa until I started reading this page.

I'm sure that I'll hear from Mr. Mayo on this topic and yes, I'm willing to try it if it's as good as you say it is.

It's absolutely beautiful stuff! It looks pretty boring at first, but as you work it, and bring the grit up, it gets more and more beautiful. It begins with the grain pattern itself, then as the grit gets finer, you notice a shimmering effect that runs transversely to the grain, giving the wood gold highlights and a swimming effect. You look into the freshly finished wood and it looks like something you could literally dive into.m At least that's why I like koa! I have appreciated koa for a long time, as some very nice guitars are made from it, too. I can't even imagine a piece of furniture made out of it!

Chiro says it much better then I could, but do check out Tom Mayo's web site for some great photos. I just got an order in from Tom and my wife is making me wear a "drool bib" around the house.

I've got some coming and I can't wait. I'm thinking about getting it stabilized and doing my Carnivore with it...if it ever gets here.......

Dav,
I though about the koa question for a while then took a look at a custom knife that I pick up in Hawaii from R. Mitsuyuki , with curly koa wood handle. Ok there's the honey color of the wood and the dark grain. But the wave of light yellow to dark brown on top of this grain that makes the wood look iridescent, no it is iridescent. Its 3D without the glasses.

Jake, sorry about the lag time on sending those scales to you....things have been busy here and I haven't gotten a chance to get to the post office. You'll be glad you waited, though! I will do my best to get it sent ASAP!

When I first used Koa I did not think it was to special. But having used it for some handles it sure is nice, some of the coarse grain makes for a interessting contrast.

Nice koa is as good looking as the best looking AAA grade walnut in the world..so the next time you look at a presentation grade Kimber rifle or a custom stocked side by side...you will know what i am talking about.
