I GOTTA OGG!

Not too long ago I got the urge for a knife that wasn’t on my list of knives to buy. A couple of things just came together and I couldn’t resist. That story is here, just in case you missed it.

Well, today I received my Ogg Bowie, and I have to tell you this is one heck of a knife. I first heard of Max Burnett this past Sept. I know you’ll be hearing a lot more about him, just check some of the other folks that are picking up on his knives and posting on them on BF’s. To see how this knife progressed from Max’s point of view go to his PhotoPoint site, you can see the story of my Bowie in his “Works in Progress” album, but take the time and look at the other albums there. If Max’s knives don’t give you wood, it may be time for a testosterone injection.

And now for the specs and review. The OAL is right around 13” the forged L6 blade ((from Michael L6 Cooper) is just under 8” and 2” wide, I have to tell you it’s one serious knife. The handle is Stag (from Jake Evans) and buffalo horn, copper & leather spacers, and iron fittings. I wanted a period Bowie so I wasn’t looking for perfect fit and finish, but this knife is really well made, and for a big knife the lines are very graceful. Especially the way Max did the guard which doubles as kind of a display stand, nice touch. The grinds are even and blend into the ricasso. Every part of the knife is rounded, except for the edge of course. I requested the sides of the blade be textured, which I understand Max does with a variety of ballpeen hammers, makes it look like it could have been made 200 years ago. He took it to a mirror polish and then blued it, stunning.

I could go on and on about how pleased I am with this knife, and maybe I’ll add some other thoughts later, but now I just want to post a pic of the knife. It’s the pic Max took when he finished it, and I haven’t had time to take any other pics, but I probably will.

I like it! I like that think handle and the curly guard and wide blade. Looks like it could chop down a tree!

happy now that one of the chat people responded????

I loathe 'chat' people. They made a movie about them once with Natasha Kinsky. Everytime she had sex (a lot, if I remember correctly), she turned into this great black chat, with claws and teeth and everything, and then ate the humans for supper. Nastty critters, really

Anyway, that is a beautiful knife Phil. Congrats to you and master Ogg. That is a knife Begging to be used. You might want to start with your house or building. Any sort of concrete would do, actually. If you manage to cut it off its foundation without having to resharpen it, you May have a knife that could earn the Cliff stamp of approval. If not, it certainly has mine. Enjoy!

Wow, PhilL, you're not the only one now! I got my friction folder from Max today, too. It's pictured under his "Knives I've made" for Ed Hausman (is me) right next to the razor, to help you find it.

The picture's not bad, but the knife is better. It is really a massive blade for a folding knife. The handle disappears in my hand, which is kind of broad, but the blade needs every bit of that stag to cover it -- the tip reaches the very crown. And the picture doesn't show how the blade gleams, or how sharp it is.

Looks darn good Phil. I have some of Max's work myself. Looking forward to knives from him in the future

UPDATED and REVISED

Geez, Phil

I just stopped into this thread to say that you spelled "I gotta Go" wrong. Thought you were leaving and just got in a hurry with the spelling, or were Lesdyxic or sumpin'. But now I see you have a beauty of a knife from Master Ogg. Lovely surprise!

That Max amazes me. Sweet stuff every time, regardless of whether or not he's ever done a particular piece, he knocks out a winner. I'm sure we'll all be adding lots of his work to our collections for years to come.

Bad Phil! Bad!!
Put that down right this minute.
You know that you're not allowed to play with those!
Bring it to me right now!
(excellent knife! bring it to the show on the 10th- I wanna play w/ it!)
cheers-
Mike

I agree with Velitrius...Max comes through with his knives even if it's his first of that type(like mine).

Chang, this was done more as a favor from a friend, but let's just say more than a 'ChangBenza' and less than you can imagine.

Yes Taz, now I'm happy

Para, WTF????

Esav, Rich and VooDoo you guys all know what I'm talking about here, when it comes to Max's knives. I know this was Max's first hidden tang knife as well as a few other things. I hope he jumps in at some point here to put in his two cents.

Rugger, I look forward to seeing you at the NY show, not only do I want to show this off to you, but to DDR, Tom, Donna and the rest of the BF's crew, but mostly I want to show it to Daniel Winkler for his opinion, after all it was his design that inspired the knife.

Ok Phil. I've obvously been following this thread. Yes, it was my first hidden tang knife. And yes, I'm pleased with how it turned out. I got yer check today for the final payment. Glad you didn't have to put up a 2nd mortgage for your house. He he. Thanks for the tip. I'll bet all the waitresses like you in your town. You didn'nt have to put in that xtra $1,000.00 you know. I was perfectly satisfied with our original deal for $1,995.95.

But seriously folks, the knife turned out ok. And I hope Phil is really happy with it. It has my heart and soul imbedded in it. I was glad for the opportunity to test my skills against Phil's demanding artwork. He's a picky bastid, you know. Thanks for the praise everyone. I just made a knife for a good friend. I'm just happy it measured up to his expectations. It damn sure kicked my butt a time or two. Look at my photopoint site and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks Phil, you a good man. Hope to make something else for you in the near future. Next time, pick something a little easier ya bastid!

Phil,

Max who? Just kidding guys.

Phil, great knife for your collection.
Max, As usual an outstanding piece. HMMMM, maybe I will have you make me a presentation grade piece.

Max, it wasn't a tip. it was just a little something extra to cove S&H and to have a couple of beers on me. So, don't go spreading this stuff that I'm a nice guy or anything, I've got a reputation to protect or I'll get banned from the Chat room.
