Some may find this boring, but I think most of you will like it, even if you already know it.

Great job sir. This is my favorite part of teaching forestry to high schoolers. Getting out and knowing your stuff. Love the video. Keep up the good work.

I did the best I could to convey the basics of tree ID in a manner that "teaches a man to fish" versus specific trees/plants (of which I do have some of those on my youtube channel). Will agree that it comes across somewhat boring, but I had to go from the perspective that someone was just getting started in this endeavor and with no outside assistance other than a book. Also, this was made for a BushcraftUSA class so it had to be relevant for the U.S. and beyond...

The first video sets up the second video which is how to use a field guide. In the second video, I demonstrate the use of a Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Trees. The reason for that book is it covers a large geography, the Western version is setup the same, it is good for beginners as it intentionally leaves out as many technical botanical terms as possible, and most folks have this book. Will be doing a "Tips" video shortly which will go into books a little bit as there is no does-it-all book out there.

Here are both videos with more to come...

Excellent thread. Thank you abo4ster. I am so very ignorant on tree identification, especially young trees. I'm going to pick that book up.

I thank you for your efforts. It's people like you that elevate YouTube from fart lighting to something useful.

Thanks for the video's. Very helpful! The Peterson Giudes really make it easy to ID.

Ugh.. sounds like you are just taking a class or you are planning on being a teacher.. Throwing out the DBH and gymnosperms.. hehe. I graduated from OSU college of forestry.. specializing in forest ecosystems.. I KNOW TREES. lol and now I work in finance.. go figure!

Now do this in winter with only twigs.. that's skill!

good vid, you should put one out on poisonous plants in your area. As this is a knife forum, and many are into survival.. Touching on edible vs poisonous.. though that could get some people into trouble :)

Maybe I'll put one out for PNW peeps.. hmmm

I have a B.S. in Forestry myself and worked as a forester professionally for many years before a career change. Yes, the video is a little dry... the result of trying to get through the basics. Not exciting, but the goal is to empower the viewer on how to use a field guide from whatever their geography. Used to teach the field portion of dendrology in college too... I am not bad in the winter...

I have a few specific tree videos out already, but very little focus on edibles. I love edibles, but in my opinion, plants are what the real food eats, but that's another topic...

I disagree. The video is only dry to those who have little interest in the subject. You did an excellent job, QB!

Also, from a survival perspective, it is much more productive to learn trapping than wild plant food, although it is a very interesting pursuit.

Thanks my friend. Agree with you on trapping vs. edible. If you think about priorities, whatever your philosphy... Rule of 3s, 98.6*, Eight hours sleep and hydrate. Food is low on the list. Learning the trees/plants in which "fire sleeps" should be the high priority, but many focus on edibles first. Perhaps another thread in order???

Those were excellent and two of the best plant identification vids I have ever seen on youtube! Great stuff Abo, thanks for that.

I thought it was good and a big help to me and plan on getting the PFG on trees, I was checking fences today and looking at branches and thinking oposite or alternate because of this video. Thanks for making this
