I had a close call...

Whenever I get a new knife all I do is flip. From when I take it out of the box to when I go to bed, I am flipping it. The knife was a Kershaw Leek, with speed safe, so it made it even more addictive. So, I was sitting there in bed watching some Nutnfancy reviews, flipping the Leek. It was hot out so my hands were pretty sweaty. I think you guys know where this is going. I was watching Nutnfancy's review on the Spyderco Bug, when while I was flipping my finger slipped off the lever and fell. It hit my arm and fell onto my bed. It didn't hurt, so I didn't think much of it. I watched about five more seconds of the video, and then looked down at my arm. Looking back at me was a water fountain four inches high of blood. I just looked at it for a second, and then slammed my hand on my arm. Half an hour later the bleeding stopped, and I'm okay. The cut isn't that big, only about a quarter of an inch, but I struck a vein. Have you guys had any close calls? I'd love to hear them.

About two decades ago, My best friend at the time were talking about disarming someone with a knife.

Well, he was quite a bit larger and stronger than me, and insisted he could take it from me. (It was a Gerber Gator and I was young). The next thing I remember, was me holding the knife as tight as possible and him grabbing my wrist and hitting my arm from behind. I told him stop your going to get cut at least five times, but he didn't listen. I even told him to let go that he had won, just so we wouldn't get hurt.

Then in a second, blood was everywhere. And I mean everywhere. Even the ceiling 10' above got sprayed. He always blamed me for it saying I tried to cut him but that wasn't true. He needed about 20 stitches I would guess, but we were young teens and hid it from our parents. I don't remember his excuse he used.

When i was "young", I used my buck 112 to break apart cars and other dumb stuff. I was cutting plastic piece and slipped right onto my thumb straight down to the bone above the knuckle. Bled for an hour or so I could see my bone and remembered thinking that was kool. Wrapped it up and never told my parents for fear of loosing my knife. Should have gotten about 4 stitches but never did and now have a nice scar to remember.

I have a good one unfortunately it is about a microtech but just bear with me. I had a halo 3 plain edge in my pocket and of course needed to cut open a taped box of plastic bags. Well turns out the end the blade comes out was sticking out towards my hand and for some stupid reason I grabbed the handle and squeezed . Just when I realized I had just pushed the button the knife engaged and proceeded to impale my hand with the tip penetrating to the point when I pulled my hand back in obvious pain and disbelief, the knife was hanging from my hand. Finally shook it free and sure enough had a bleeding stab wound in my hand and somehow have no scar. Oh and I forgot to mention it was a tanto which made it worse. For the record I lost that knife 3 years ago.

Years ago I was whittlin' a piece of wood with my Boy Scout knife. Things were going smoothly when all at once I hit a spot on the wood where I couldn't extract the knife. So I pulled on the back of the knife trying to work it out starting with the rear part of the blade. In an instant, the blade came out and snapped shut on the bottom of my thumb. At first I thought I was okay as there was just a long cut that wasn't bleeding. Then, suddenly, it was...all over the place. And it wasn't spraying, it was gurgling! I got a couple of tissues in an attempt to stop the bleeding and rushed into my grandmother's house and into the bathroom. Between my mother and grandmother, we finally got the blood stopped. Going to the local emergency room, I got a bunch of stitches and it just kind of ruined my summer vacation. It also queered me on slipjoint knives to this day. I stayed away from all knives until I bought a linerlock at a Dollar Store. It proved very handy and I wanted to see what else was available. That's how I got into knives, or rather...how they got into me!

The moral here?

Don't watch Nutnfancy reviews.

First time I had to use my knife as an EMT I failed to fully deploy it. The lock didn't engage and I immediately became the second patient on the scene instead of a rescuer. Not wildly painful, but exceedingly humiliating.

I know this will be unpopular here on a knife forum, but what the hell, I've never cared about being popular.

Maybe it's not a good idea to play with knives like they are toys. Especially considering the types of unpleasant mishaps that can occur. One lapse in concentration and you might earn a trip to the hospital, not to mention being left physically impaired, miss work, maybe lose your job, have medical bills to pay, etc, etc. Wouldn't we all teach our kids not to play with knives (those of us old enough to have kids).

I like knives too, but I respect that they can be dangerous, even little ones, if you aren't handling them responsibly. Certainly it's possible to accidentally cut onself when USING a knife, but even then, whether it's a knife, or a hammer, or a power drill, or any other tool, it's VERY important to put safety first. I personally don't think that knives make good toys. Playing with a knife makes about as much sense to me as playing with a loaded gun.

Just my opinions. Feel free to ignore them. I know a lot of people on this forum like to play with their knives.

Are you sure it's a vein? The blood from veins shouldn't cause fountains of blood - it should just pour/flow/come out the wound at the rate of your pulse. And it should be pretty dark blood.
If it comes out in a (pulsating) fountain and if the color is light reddish, it's not a vein but an artery and perhaps worth seeing a doctor...

//edit & at topic: I once accidently partially cut a tendon - which might be considered a "close call". Fortunately I didn't go to see a doctor at first (i had to attend some craftsmen at my parents house and look after my little brothers for a day) - fortunately, because when my parents got into the drive way and i had a short look into a mirror and pushed away some hair it made the sound like when you pop a knuckle and I the long flexing tendon of my left thump ripped apart... If I had gone to the doctor earlier, they would've sewn it back together and the tendon might have snapped at a later time...
But actually... all of this sounds like it's already beyond a close call (at least acc. to my definition of a close call? perhaps that definition is incorrect?)

Interesting that you say that. I wonder what balisong guys would think of that LOL. A whole separate hobby dedicated to flipping around sharp blades. Any who, i have cut myself pretty bad a couple of times. I was flipping my cold steel recon 1 the other dat and my thumb was in the way when I closed. needless to say the papers on my desk had to be thrown out or cleaned off. No worries though, they were just bills.

Sounds very similar to my experience. Folded on my thumb, causing a painful gash but was afraid that if I showed my parents I would end up having to get stitches, so I just held pressure with a towel until it quit bleeding and covered it with a bandage. I still have the scar 50 yrs later. I also have tentative feelings about slip joints and am always dumbfounded by laws against "Locking Knives".

I've had a couple. Did this while learning some basic flips.

Not a big cut, but it was deep. And a little higher up and it would have hit a tendon. Bled like a stuck pig for about 30 minutes.

I tried to stab a box and stabbed my thumb...

the tip poked out the other side, luckily nothing was actually damaged. I think.

If blood was spurting out of your arm I don't think that was a close call. :D

Here's my close call.... I was sitting in the drive thru and was playing with my spyderco yojimbo 2. Somehow it slipped out of my hands and the knife fell into my crotch with the blade opened. Luckily for me it landed flat on the side, but my A-hole puckered so hard I could've snapped a 2x4 in half with my buttcheeks.

I was trying to flip open my new Cold Steel XLG tanto. It's not exactly easy and no sooner than it did snap open than my right hand accidentally hit the locking device. The blade suddenly fell from its open position and caught the top of my finger at the joint and not only cut it, but mashed it due to its weight (the tanto blade is substantially heavier than the clip point and Vaquero). My finger's still so swollen that my right hand's index finger will not point straight. It bends and the swollen area keeps it from straightening. It's embarrassing, but also taught me a lesson to maybe handle a knife like I handle a gun.

On the plus side, I can type more easily with that hand and my finger hits the keys easier and at a better angle. Don't know whether it will ever straighten out again or not. If it doesn't, I'm going to have to do the same thing with my left finger...and I'm not looking forward to that. Bled like an oil well. Because I'd been taking a blood thinning medication it took forever to stanch. Maybe we should have a Sticky on how to stop bleeding and other helpful hints!

I've hit myself several times in the scrotum while flipping my balisong while sitting. Luckily, it was never the blade, so it's all good, I suppose. Also, I was playing with a cheap extensible baton, and, when I extended it, part of it got loose and flew and landed inches away from my friend's crotch.
