The day was hectic, but I had a great time. I set out early in the afternoon for a few errands, then planned to take the kids (5y/o boy, 4y/o boy, 1 y/o girl) to a local metropark for a dayhike. I got the kids ready and packed WAY too much gear. (As my good friend Adam says, if you're not always prepared you're never prepared, right?) First stop was the Post Office to mail out some trade items to NoseWarmer. Second stop was to Richard's Sporting Goods--I had a $20 gift card reward from buying an elliptical that expires this weekend. They didnt have much in the camping section in that price range (hardly anything at all really) and I couldnt afford to spend any of my money so I picked up a few things I thought I could use. I got a pack of glow in the dark ABS tent stakes, a pair of Figure 9 biners and a compass (the only one I had was a $2 carabiner compass--I dont really travel to places I dont know, but figured everyone should have a decent compass). I also grabbed a survival saw for a project I am working on. I am making 2 survival saw bracelets for a friend in exchange for a new Integral Designs Siltarp1. --We then grabbed some food at the store and headed to the park. Lunch was nice but very very windy--After lunch we spent some time chasing down and picking up all the napkins and plates that blew off the table---lol---We then took a nice little walk---I was without my better half so the boys had to take turns riding on the front of our double stroller (baby in back obviously). We werent able to walk as long as I would have liked but I did get to spend some time in the woods with almost all of my favorite people. I did manage to give the boys a few small lessons on plant identification and how to properly pee in the woods without peeing on your brother:4:--I didnt even get to break out any of my gear but it was there "just in case". I did snap a few photos of the kids and my blades. I think I had too many knives on me......-----SLAP!!!!!----thanks I needed that. Dont know what I was thinking. Heres some pics of the day.....
Pic 1---My Gear--On the left my Maxpedition 10x4 pouch with a ACU mag pouch and an older Marlboro pouch with button compass and thermometer on the front---On the right is my German Bread Bag---Some of the things in the kit were: Nalgene Backpacker, Stanley Cook Pot, GSI Mug, Space Blanket, FAK, SAK One Hand Trekker,Leatherman Wave, ESEE3, BK14, RAT1, repair kit, SOL Emergency Bivy and Heat Sheet and a few other things-----Still working on this kit--this was kind of a dry run to see how it carried.
Pic 2--Along the Trail--This park isnt too bad considering its a metropark (although it is a few miles out of town)--This is my favorite section, it has a very old feel to it---Every time I walk this section it transforms me back to when the Native Americans lived off the land (probably on this very creek).
Pic 3-- The blades I brought ---ESEE3, BK14, Victorinox One-Hand Trekker, Ontario RAT1
Pic 4--The blades that the boys opted to bring---
