I had a sharpening idea!

This weekend some of us responded to a thread in which a forumite asked for recommendations on what sharpening system to purchase; either the Spyderco Sharpmaker or the Edge Pro Apex. While some very good comparisons and suggestions were made, a recurring theme that resulted from this analysis was that the Sharpmaker was superior to the Apex when it came to sharpening recurved blades.

While this is generally true, Comrade Changbenza shared with us how he has addressed this minor shortcoming of the Apex system by affixing a wooden pencil or dowel to the aluminum plate that comes with the Apex upgrade kit (it doesn't have a stone and is used in conjunction with 3000 grit polishing tapes). Comrade C's ingenious recommendation involves taping sandpaper over the rounded profile of the 6" dowel, thus allowing you to take full benefit of the mechanical advantages afforded by the Edge Pro, while still being able to follow the reverse contours of the recurved edge.

Following on the heels of this bit of brilliance, I subsequently had the thought yesterday at work, that if Apex owners were to simply remove the brass colored spacer between the grip ball and the moveable plate attachment point, it might be possible to expand the "jaws" of the system wide enough to actually secure one of the triangular ceramic hones from the Sharpmaker system (point down, of course). Well, I'm happy to report that I went home last night, gave it a try, and sure enough it worked like a charm.

Having recently received a beautiful large Apogee from Darrel Ralph with an extremely wear resistant S90V blade, I found that with this setup I was quickly and easily able to improve on the already sharp edge that arrived on the folder. I guess this is just one more reason why it's good to have both of these excellent systems at your disposal.

BTW, another tip: You don't need to reorder polishing tapes when you are done. Just find your own polishing compound that is really inexpensive. Put two layers of masking tape over the blank and charge the top layer with your compound. Sharpen in reverse with the polishing tape you just made. Works wonders. I use red rouge, but that isn't quite fine enough yet, so I might get some even finer stuff. The bottom layer is a safety. Just in case the top layer gets cut, your edge never touches the plate.

Ben and I talked about such a system (incorporating a triangular rod) some time ago but I certainly know I never got around to doing it. Gald to see someone else did

However, I haven't had a problem sharpening re-curves with my Apex (Commander, BM 710, BM 750, khukris, I'd even do my Civillian if it weren't serrated).

Johan,
How are you sharpening recurves with your flat stones? Are you just holding the stones at an angle and using the edges?

I pretty much use the flat of the stone for all of the blade, occasionally I turn the stone slightly if I have a really tight turn to make. Ben told me he once sharpend a kris (super curvy Middle Eastern blade) with an Apex. In all honestly, and please don't think I'm being smug, I've never had a serious problem with recurves and I assure you, they are sharp!

I've just received my Professional modal today so I'll be playing with that and writing a review soon. One of the test knives will be a khukri so I'll see if the Pro is the same, better or worse than the Apex.Hope this is of some help.

Bronco, you could probably do it with the edges, but the edges are generally a little gritty. You could try smoothing them on a flat benchstone and then I'm sure you could use them like that.

I sharpened a Kris blade balisong two months ago. Wish I had learned of the Sharpmaker stones idea and tried it like that. I think I did an OK job, the the gritty edges but a good amount of marks on the mirror finish. Thats when I gave up on the mirror finish idea for recurves and kris blades and just finished with the blue ceramic steel that came with the upgrade and a strop.
