Hey guys i just wanted to let you know that i sent my zt 560 blade Elmax to get tested and reheat treated if necessary. Well I got a call this morning from Brad at peters heat treat. He is the cutlery guy. He said that my blade was at 61-62 . And that it might not help to reheat treat. He wasn't sure if a cryo was done on Kershaws or ZT so i at least had him do that. Now I did this blade I had tested was a blade i returned to ZT complaining about the edge retention. so I don't have serial number.
But there i have it the steel is at 61-62.
Side note Brad did tell me if they are getting there steel that had that they are doing it right. He may have used different words but his plication was they did good job.

It wont detract those who think the 0560 is somehow flawed.

Thank you! We can finally let thing thing go. I love my ZT Elmax on my 0801. It has been a trooper to my abuse.

Well, blade hardness wouldn't solve ergo issues.

*pure speculation on my part*

-If they burned the steel, would rockwell testing reveal anything useful?

-Would re-heat treating do anything if the steel was burned?

did you sharpen it to a very aggressive low angle? if so try sharpening it to 15 - 20 degrees per side. Elmax is a great steel and that's the right hardness.. what's the purpose of this tread? you left out a lot of info

I thought people were complaining about the burnt edges affecting the steels performance. How would a rockwell test do anything for this theory?

+1

In fact, HRC hardness isn't always imply to edge retention as many people thought. You can have many steel at late 60's HRC by just not do tempering process... some people keep said that only custom's HT would get to the optimal hardness IMO that is a pure BS.

ZT from what I know just had trouble when during the first runs of many of their ELMAX knives and the issue has been resolved for awhile now. I know my later version and a few of their other knives have been doing great steel wise.

The major complaint i heard of was and shared was poor edge retention. Very poor. I sent in to warranty where they changed blade.
I wanted to know hardness.
My point to post was to let other who may have problem know that ZT has taken care of MY problem with MY knife. I appreciate them doing what they did and the way they did it.

God I hate babies and there are alot of those on here......Its only thing I hate about this hobby is all the know irt all babies, dont get me wrong there is alot of great and helpful people in this game as well but sometimes it seems 50/50. Thanks for sharing this info with us

It's a two way street. Lest we forget the KAI whining threads that dominated General Knife Discussion for a month after they shut down their forum, or the people recomending kai knives in the Spyderco subforum.

Yeah, there are people who enjoy trolling the KAI devotees or posted long whiny complaints about their products. But the ridiculous reaction that alot of the KAI fanatics seem to have towards any percieved criticism doesn't help things.

Agree with someone = they are wise and knowledgable

Disagree with someone = they are a crying baby

If you want to discuss the people, open your own thread in Whine & Cheese. General Knife Discussion is for discussing the knives, knowledgeably or foolishly, all honest opinions welcome.

Same goes for my 0561, the elmax on it worked just fine...

Maybe it's people's expectations that need to be modified and/or re-adjusted and not the blade steel. ;):D

Ergo issues? Seriously? It's one of the best I've ever wrapped my paws around.

The burnt nonsense...I won't even bother. Pure blather.

Thank you for taking the time and money to have the test done. Says a lot IMO, and also for stating facts and not opinions. Good post !

Thanks to the OP. I cant explain how pleased I am with the 0561 I have # 3381. Its awesome performance all around has been impressive. And the blade is just knarly and durable.
Thanks again. I realize why the KAI forum closed. I think less time around here might be better, although I love it.

i have a brinell hardness machine and some rockwell machines in the materials testing lab. i tested my low serial blade at 61 and a hook. wasn't quiet 61.5.... and it brinelled at 675. both machines are also calibrated weekly

If the 0560-561 didn't have as aggressively textured Ti and G10 (like on the carbon fiber models or the 0550), as well as slightly toned down jimping, I'd probably own one. Knives don't need that much texturing to be secure in hand*, even with gloves.

*The statement I made is just as absurdly relative as yours BTW.
