Today I was at my local gun and knife show and stopped by one of the regular's table for a quick glance and a chance to see if there were any custom Perrin's to be had. This guy has been known to be full of BS. last year he swaore left and right that no detection system period would pick up Ti and was also trying to sell Mad dog Frequent Flyers for $350... Anyway he told me he had a custom CQC-8 that was one of a kind... It had a bannana Grip which he said Emerson would no longer make. It was stamped with the Emerson Logo and a 2001 date, under the date in smapp print was Specwar. He said that his wife was able to convince Mr.Emerson to make on just for her a few months ago (if this is true and I was on a 5 year wait list I would be really angry). He is were I got really suspcious... I have handled a few Custom CQC-6's and 7's at various New York City knife shows. They were beyond smooth and truly incredible knives. Upon handling this knife it felt horrible!!!(no disrespect to Mr. Emerson) My production Commander, CQC-7 and Mini CQC-7 were all smoother and had a better liner lock...Than the guy said it was $1,200... Cash or Personal Check only face to face... If this is truly a one of a kind custom CQC-8 why is it so cheap? I am curious... Was I too cautious? Did I let the deal of a life time slip away? Has anyone ever heard of knock off customs? Thanks for any and all info...

You've got my curiosity up. There's a dealer that frequents the local NY/NJ shows who's always got a story that's usually bull. Couple of years ago he tried to sell me a Polkowski with a white micarta handle and spent 2 hours telling me that Al won't use white micarta anymore, one of a kind, etc. I went home and called Al P. who lives about 15 miles from me and was told that white micarta is available at no extra charge, just ask for it. This wasn't the first time he lied to me either. I'm curious if it's the same guy. Initials L.G.?

Don't know whether or not yours was not a authentic Emerson or was but I do remember hearing that there is a big market for conterfeit Emerson customs in Japan. I asked around when I heard about the rumor but I'm not sure if it is true or not but I can believe it. If there is a market for it, which there is you can see it by the secondary market prices, people will stoop to doing something like that.

Other than the feel was there anything else about the knife that looked outta whack?

Guntaholic,

Go to the source: Ask Ernie.

Any one of this dealer's story components would make it a hard sell but with everything going on in the dealers story it seems completely outrageous.

So basically this dealer wants you to believe that he charmed Ernie into to going out of his way to make a one off of an already custom knife? And within a few months???
I suppose anything is possible, but with everything that Ernie is doing these days it seems highly unlikely.

The logo also sounds very suspect. This sounds bogus unless Ernie has revised it since the New York Show.
Also, I am unclear as to what "bannana grip" means. Is this a reference to the older grip with sculpted contours prior to the current design?

Finally, if the quality was as bad as you say I would really be further amazed if this knife came out of his shop.

David yes it was the Middletown Show, Lifter, Your got the right guy!!! I was discussing this one with a co-worker/fellow knife nut today... The same dealer really ripped him off a few years back at the Yonkers raceway show! He was very new to knife collecting but had heard of Boker Speed Locks being hard to come buy and easily recognizable from the Tops Locks due to a lack of thumb nail on the blade... well the same dealer sold him a Boker Black Bomber as a Speed Lock for $250 when you can probably pick one up fpr $75, You can imagine how he felt latter on!!!!
I am going to send Mr.Emerson a letter tonight in hopes of turning up more info. Thanks for all the help....

Guntaholic,
That guy has been doing all the small shows around here for awhile. The scary part is that he's had a table at the Nov. NY Show the last 2 or 3 years. You can pretty much tell he's lying because his lips are moving. Your friend's experience with the Boker is not unique. He ripped my friend off a few year's ago for a "genuine" SEAL black knife. If it's on his table and it's genuine, it's overpriced, and if it's a bargain you can bet it's a phony.
I won't post his name here because if he's around he's the kind of idiot who'd try to sue. If you want his name, email me.
Oh yeah, and he tells everybody he had a heart transplant.
Dave

I could be mistaken, but I believe that Ernie's custom logo has the year at the bottom of the logo, with nothing additional written beneath.
