I hate EKI...

Last friday, I ordered a knife. I came in here, asked about model numbers to make SURE I was getting what I wanted, (Thanks John H.) then sent the email order off. Come Monday, I'd received no confirmation that EKI had gotten my order so I called them. Turns out this is their normal procedure, but the nice lady is kind enough to look up my order for me and inform me that they were out of the specific one I'd asked for, so they'd taken the blade from another one to put together exactly what I'd wanted. For those who don't know, this is what's called EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Today, just moments ago, a knock came at my front door. It was the UPS dude.

I immediately went into my happy puppy routine, trying to wag my tail and jump up and down, but the UPS dude stays until he gets my signature even though he looks pretty worried by this time.

Anyway...

I get rid of the UPS dude, and grab my box, and bring it in here to my computer, knife and gun room. (...these are a few of my favorite things....) and open it up.

Out flashes my razor sharp Commander and zip, zip, zip, the box is open and I do not miss the irony of opening an Emerson with an Emerson. (Side thought, if you buy your first knife off the net, how do you get the box open? Chew it?)

I gently lift the by now familiar red and black box out of it's nest in the styro peanuts. (dunno why they call'em peanuts they taste like crap!)

I open the box, and inside is a plastic bag, I open that, and inside is ANOTHER plastic bag, but this one holds the PRIZE!

A BEAUTIFUL, FLAWLESS, PERFECT green handled, Black T bladed CQC-7B with wave. It's perfect. Without flaw. The heft feels like it was born to fit my hand. It screams to slip into my pocket and try DA WAVE!

Then... What's this? Little tiny numbers next to the disk? What's that? My Commander doesn't have that!?!?

I squint just a hair, (The UPS man woke me up, my eyes are always a little fuzzy when I first wake up, yeah, I'm getting old, thanks for noticing.) and I make out the numbers and letters, "093" and "WAVE." I wonder what that means? I look at the box, and on the tag, it says, "CQC-7B BTS W/WAVE SERIAL# 093.

Oh no. No, it can't be. 093??? One of the first HUNDRED? I can't carry THIS!!!!

Crap. I'm gonna have to buy another one.

Hey Ken,
I was scared at first too, but once you use that pristine CQC-7B it gets easier!

Great story Ken! Congrats on the knife!!! Question - did you get the plain edge or the combo edge? I'm curious, cuz I don't think Ernie makes plain edges anymore.

Would you really use this? Am I making too much of it being such a low number? I kind of figured that this is going to turn out to be a VERY popular little knife when it goes into general production and there might be collector value there.

I've never been a big one for "collectors" I'd usually rather use them as knives instead of dust magnets, but then again, I'd hate to destroy a potentially great collector piece.

What do y'all think?
Would you use this knife or leave it in the box?

I held onto my SOCFK for a while before using it because it was just so nice looking in all its unused, pristine glory. But I got over that when I realized what a great carry knife it made.
Generally speaking, I don't consider the production knives much of a collector's item (which makes them great candidates for enthusiastic use!). But hey, that's me and I could be wrong.

Ken,

Arkansas Ham Drifter, LOL. Actually, my username, arkhamdrifter, really translates into Arkham Drifter which makes reference to the fictional New England town of Arkham and Arkham County. Arkham and its surrounding environs originaly appear in the short stories written by the late American author of the early twentieth century, H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft is most recognized for his story, The Peculiar Case Of Charles Dexter Ward.
I do happen to love ham though. Damn those dietary laws!

Congratulations Ken

i know the feeling. i had some of the first Commanders when they came out with some serial numbers on it with i would consider low compared to how many he serialized.

i kept one prestine for awhile and used the other one and when i did. WOW! It still rides my right hand pocket.

Carry it and enjoy it. Don't deny yourself the pleasure.

Well the response seems to be unanimous, and to be honest, it was the answer I was secretly hoping for. So when I leave the house in a little while, the CQC will go tucked in the pocket. I can't imagine how long it will take me to actually CUT something with it though.

Thanks guys.

I can also attest to the excellent customer service as EKI also switched out a serrated blade(removed) for a non-serrated blade(installed) on a particular handle I wanted. I certainly hope that EKI has not stopped making unserrated blades! Excpet for the SARK, I generaly have no use for serrations.
