I Hate My CQC7B

I own a CQC7B it has been in pocket for 3 weeks, I don’t usually EDC a folder for this long, switching every few days or day to day, longest a week.

When I got the knife my first impression was wow I paid this much for a knife with an uneven handle, some parts had liner protruding from the handle and most of the G10 is not flushed with the liner. The washers are so gritty it is not possible to flick this knife open no matter how much I lube it or adjust the pivot. I even cut my ring finger on the first day closing the blade since the chisel grind has the cutting edge very close to the liner instead of the center of the knife like the rest of my folders.

First three days used the knife with my left hand, the cut on my finger was deep so could not hold it properly on my right hand, deploying the knife with my left index finger because the knife is designed as right hand only, the washers becomes smoother and smoother but never allowing the blade to quickly open. Noticed that the blade is disproportionate to the handle; blade too short handle too long.

Ahhhh day four finger healed, wave feature engaged, started using the knife with my dominant hand, no need to practice wave feature, very natural when pulling knife out of pocket aggressively, after that day never employed the wave again, never in a situation where I need to deploy the blade right out of my pocket.

After one week of using, the handle is that size for a reason, very ergonomic no matter how you hold it, the blade design is a work of art, still don’t understand why they didn't sand everything down on the handle and make it perfect matching the blade. Still in my pocket neglecting my other folders.

Two weeks, damn why doesn't this thing flick open, but love how this knife opens with an even force from detent till a perfect lock up. Rounded the tip cutting sandpaper on glass, this chisel grind is so easy to sharpen just stroke the hell out of it on one side and swipe it a few times on the other.

Last night, decided to sand down the stainless liner and the G10 myself, got it close to perfect. Don’t get me wrong some part of me still hates this knife but I have become very fond and attached to it. First knife I couldn't tweak and adapt to my liking had to adapt myself to it.

Still not sure what is wrong with me, this is a knife I would love to hate, nothing spectacular about it, I don’t even wave it, but it is the one I reach for every morning when I leave the house.

Goson - they do seem to grow on you, don't they? Glad you're liking the 7.

Ya know, I seem to be having the same issue and I really don't understand it. I have several different knives I rotate through for EDC. Benchmades, Spyderco, etc., but as of late I've noticed I am usually grabbing either my Traveler, or the Mini A100. I like a smaller knife for EDC. I do have a Strider PT on the way from a fellow forum member that I'm eager to check out and expect it will make it into rotation if the reviews are accurate.

I like my other branded knives just fine and I've noticed the little bit of rough finish on my Emerson's, but no biggee. Actually, i kind of like it. Weird I know, but it sorta gives them an every day knife look and not a safe queen. The Emerson's seem to have something intangible that either you get or not. I've read through all the posts hammering on the Emerson's cost, fit & finish or what have you. Some raise perhaps valid points. But, at least to me, it's really a simple answer - just don't buy one. There are many fine companies out there with terrific products to choose from. That's one of the things that makes this pastime (obsession?) so much fun. Sorry for the long ramble.

You mention you have lubed and adjusted the pivot. Have you taken it apart and cleaned it? I have a Roadhouse and a SOCFKB that needed cleaning to get them to smooth out. I found a Youtube video that showed me how, it's not difficult at all.

I love the chisel grind on the CQC7B but was concerned about my hand slipping forward on the grip if I had to poke something. That is why I opted for the SOCFKB.

My seven never won me over. Its somebody else's now.

Yep, same here. A fine knife but the handle was just a bit to squared off for my hands.

I agree with Joe58's second paragraph as well.

This tread was much different than I expected. Thanks guys and good morning.

Hello Fred,

Thanks for the tip yes I cleaned it thoroughly and applied teflon grease, it's smooth as can be but if I adjust the pivot till no blade play, then the blade will not fly open. Also love to get the SOCFKB but not available in Thailand, not really concerned because I never stabbed anything when I use my knife.

I would be lying my butt off if I didn't say the 7 is one of the ugliest knives I own, and I think it's for that reason alone that it's one of my favorite knives ever. This knife really goes for function over style, and no other knife I own feels more comfortable in my hand.
As far as fast flicking goes, I have always preferred a slower more deliberate style, and it is faster than a switchblade with the use of the wave, so I get the best of both worlds. My experience has been that Emersons break in and smooth out over time so hopefully it'll sort itself out for you.

Its a cool knife. I have one but I dont carry it, and I most likley wont buy another. Im not a huge fan of tantos with no belly though. I keep it in the truck and us it rather than trying to get a knife out of my pocket with a seatbelt on. Ill probably give it to any friend that show interest in it or something.

I hated Emersons and thought they were overpriced and overrated and ugly and oddly proportioned.....

.....and then I owned one.....

....and now I own 10

Enjoy the knife. I appreciate and can relate to the story. I still look for reasons not to like the first one I bought, but its the last one id ever sell.

I had a 7B for a few years but felt the same -- smooth opening and no blade play yet the tanto wasn't working for me. So, I got a 7A and prefer that blade shape.

...but if I adjust the pivot till no blade play, then the blade will not fly open
This is my current experience with my 7A. I don't understand how to maintain a smooth opening when I adjust my pivot til no blade play. I can open it one-handed but I am muscling it. And waving is not a problem. Interestingly I have the same experience with my Journeyman -- adjusted pivot so no blade play yet no smooth opening.
