I hate Privet

I have some large Privet bushes at my mother's house that I need to kill. Chopping it down is good INFIcise but I think that the dang stuff comes raging back better than before. What I need is a chemical solution that will kill it dead, dead, dead! Roundup brush killer just browns out the leaves for awhile.

Does anyone know of something fatal to Privet, short of digging it up?

A pickup truck and a manageable length of rope should make short work of it.

Edit for proof:

OH MAN...I hate Ligustrum (Privet) too. I should have taken pics of the one I took down the other day. It had a 28" base and was like 30 feet tall. They are about as invasive as they come.

There are 2 ways of getting rid of it without ripping it out. One is organic the other isnt.

The non-organic way is to cut them off at the base and immediately after brush the tops with a toothbrush and the strong Roundup.

The other way is to cut the bush and leave about a foot of it and wrap that in black plastic and leave it for a season. Mulch 4 inches all around the area. This has worked for me before. You just need to cut out the light and stop photosynthesis.

And like MikeyMoto posted if you have the access...pull them out with a truck and some rope.

Hope this helps.

Both of these have work for me with blackbery and bamboo.

Remedy herbicide from DowAgro, but it is regualted and you need a license to get it. It kills french rose hedge. My dad uses it and P+D herbicide on his pastures. Remedy also will kill out mesquite brush. It is about the best thing out there for woody plants (to kill them that is).

Can you not cut the hedge down until there's just stumps then pour diesel into the stumps? I know it's not too friendly to the soil but I hear it kills stuff dead.

A few well spaced interval applications of Round-Up (Glyphosate) will ultimately kill them after you've cut them down. Keep an eye out for a local towing company. We have a few around here that make some side cash with their chains and trucks;)

Hey Mike
Looking at the pics in the new sticky. I see you still stand out in a crowd:eek:

i agree. i would spray it every couple days until the leaves are completely brown and dead. roundup works by being absorbed by the leaves; pouring it on the roots has been ineffective in my experience.
being that privet has a hard shiny leaf it will be slow to absorb the chemical, try to get the undersides as well as the top. spray during the hottest part of the day if you can.
good luck!

Can you cut a ring around the trunk to cut off the flow of nutrients? Or does the phloem not exist at the bark in these bushes?

Just cut 'em down and then soak the stumps with the Roundup. You may have to do it a week later to ensure it is taken up sufficiently.

If you don't kill the stumps they may sucker back with surprising vigor. Girdiling as Eric_425 will work but then you have the unsightly wilting tops to look at.
I would just tear them out entirely.

Privet have a very fibrous root system so it's going to take a little ambition to get them out.
