I hate the winter. I have to do all of my grinding and stuff outside, and my bench has been under snow for over a month now :(. I need to get a shed or something, but cant afford it, so i cant even work on any orders or anything. Anyone else grind outside and have trouble with the weather always interfering??

Taz,
I can relate to some degree. Although my small shop holds most of my tools the forge and I are subject to all the elements.:(

Damn.... I was complaining about it being cold in my workshop and having to heat by kerosene heater. I am humbled, put in my place and will never complain again about my working conditions.

I have everything in my basement. I have no garage or shed and the MI winters would not allow me to work outside (it is -2 today with wind chill). So the grinder, forge, mill, ht oven, power hammmer, etc are all in the basement. The worst part is going to be moving all that stuff outside when/if i build a garage.:)

Winter sucks! Last week I got sunburned, helping my wife wash her truck.
It actually has been an abnormally warm winter here. At the moment, it's 72 degrees F. It's Hell.;) :D

last night it was a balmy 6 degrees out:eek: mid 20'ts today, forged a little bit today at Indian George's place today, and the dragon was some HOT!... Taz take up forging...i promise you wont regret it!
Mike, 72 degrees... send some of that Arizona sunshine this way brother!:D

It is +24 here in Fairbanks Alaska. We have had a very mild winter. It could be -60. I have worked in sheds garages and back rooms with all different kinds of heat. Twelve years ago I built my 24x26 two story shop, studio. It is amasing how much more work can be done in a warm shop.I will be headed down to Arizona in two weeks to go to the fossil show in Tucson. It sure breaks the winter up.
Mike I came through Cottonwood a few years ago and could not belive the growth there.I am originaly from Prescott and spent time on a friends ranch on the Verde when I was a kid.I guess nothing stays the same.

Taz! Buddy!

Down here on the Rust Coast, we can't wait for the winter! Man is it nice. We have folks that we refer to as "Winter Texans" come down from all parts. In Arizona they call them snow birds. Why, out around Sabinal, Hondo and Uvalde, just west of San Antonio, we call that area the Winter Garden. They grow spinach, cabbage, califlower and whatnot.

Its the summertime we loathe. We do still have four seasons here...

Almost summer, Summer, Still Summer, and Deer Season.

Only seen a snowblower one time. I was visiting my brother in Arlington, Mass and he was showing me his. Not much use for one of those down here.

Well, I know how lucky I am to have my shop in the basement. My first shop was a small table with a little 2X48 hobby grinder on it that I'd set on my apt's patio and work. I'd drill into a board on the step.

Yep, lucky.

But I hate to sweat so much I find that I love the winter! Yeah, my skin is so dry my fingers are all split and bleeding and I drop everything I try to pick up. Yeah, the shop does get cold and I have to wear a sweatshirt or I shiver so bad I can't grind.

But that beats the hell out of 90 degrees and 90 percent humidity every long day. I wish I could save some of this cold dry up like a battery and have some comfort for the long hot summer...

Naturally, my wife is totally opposite me, and the furnace runs like crazy all winter...and I write the gas checks. End up paying to sweat!

I have an old 11x21 Model T garage I have been making in for years.Wind pretty much blows straight through. I even tried 2 kerosun heaters, had to run them 24/7 to keep it just warm enough to work in.I had a new shop errected right along side, one of those 12x12 prefab "barns" from Menards put up.I planned to do my finishing work in it,but the day(Sept.14)the guys got it done a chiropractor blew one of my spinal discs out+ buldged another.Still laid up.How's that for luck.Dang shop looks good, though.John

LOL. you guys down south are lucky :) The snow is finally clearing and warming up, so i hope to work on some of these orders. I am not going to take any more orders because i got a new job that has me on call for armed security response basically 24/7 unless i am at my other security job. hopefully i can get these orders done and out soon.

I alos have the problem of dealing with the cold. Now I have taken over my dads shed. I insulated the ceiling, and borrowed my brothers propane heater. It gets nice and toasty in the shed after about 20 min. I also have on wool socks and full length insulated coverallls. Come spring maybe you could look into getting a small shed, the prices will be cheap. You could probally get one for about $500 from home depot! Yopu could also build one. It dosen't have to be fancy, just something to get you out of the weather.
