Planning to make Blade, but don't think I'll be able to make Knob Creek (it's @500 mile each way and I haven't found anyone from my neck of the woods who's going). I've got a very short list of INFI that I'd like to try to snag and am hoping that one of them will make an appearance at the Creek, and I'd hate to miss out. If any of you Hogs would be willing to proxy for me I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

GregB

If I lose my mind and decide to drive down on Saturday, will there be anything left? I doubt that this will happen, as my wife's aunt died this a.m. and I figure I'll be busy this weekend.

I'm still looking for a proxy PM or email me and I'll give you my cell phone # and we can discuss.

There was a time not so long ago when finding a proxy was easy. I am not really sure why it seems more difficult nowadays. It either has to be that not many folks are going (possibly due to the economy???) or the little porkers are having a hard enough time carrying their own weight nevermind trying to help out another. It may be a little bit of both too.

Let me stipulate that my comments are not directed at anyone who has posted in this thread, but are of a general nature.

Proxy buying is based on trust and a sense of brotherhood/community. There have been cases of proxy buyers being burned when the asker didn't pay for the knife. Or it turns out that the asker had multiple proxy buyers. Or a person may not want to proxy if he thinks the asker may just flip the knife for profit, or doesn't know the asker. It may be that as the ranks of Busse fans has grown, it is harder to maintain the strong sense of community that the original band of brothers here enjoyed

I have helped some folk, and have been helped by others, but it comes down to trust.

I don't see an issue with multiple proxies as long as the buyer buys what the proxies are able to get. Multiple people get to the trough at different times, and if you have good relationships with several people, it can be nice insurance if you're looking for a special knife.

George, some HOGs have always looked out for each other and tried to spread the wealth so that a number of folks had a shot at a knife at a decent price. Proxying is one manifestation of this attitude.

However, when a single person has multiple proxies and lands knives with all of them, simple logic suggests that he is probably not going to use or keep all those knives. Depending on the person, it is also hard to say whether he is going to share the wealth with other HOGs at Shop prices or try to profit from the four or five extra knives. This latter method is basically the same as buying up six knives and selling off five ("flipping") at a profit so that the buyer/seller gets a free or discounted knife.

There's nothing wrong with collecting and making money off your collection, but it sticks in the craw of some folks, some HOGs included, when such immediate tactics take knives out of their hands at prices they can afford. Kind of tough to swallow when you don't get that knife you want and then see it six weeks later on the exchange at a $100 mark-up. I know we like to carry on about "Hogs eat their own" and "No Regrets," but the fact is that many acts of kindness involving at-cost sales still go on behind the scenes within certain factions of the HOG clan.

Well put Guyon.

"Depending on the person" like you said. Take George for instance, I know that Hog would keep all he could get!!!:p And many others would not flip for profit, but pass the extra proxy scores on at cost.
They will always be the flippers, but I've learned to not let it bother me one bit...well not as much at least:p

The phrase, "as long as the buyer buys what the proxies are able to get" is the key; I think resinguy is describing a case where one both proxies score, but the buyer only wants one of what each proxy bought.

Last time I proxied, I wasn't able to score for any of the folks I was trying to buy for. I felt like I'd let them down, which was a downer for me. Also, I'm reluctant to volunteer as a proxy without knowing what someone wants ahead of time -- if they want the same things I do (like older, straight-handle 4 to 7-inch designs), then I'd be committing to restrict what I could buy for myself. If you're looking for high $ INFI, like a MOAB and/or an AK, fronting that much money could be an issue -- then there's the whole handle material/color combo, am I getting the right one kind of thing. I'm sympathetic to your plight, but (at least for me) blindly agreeing to what your asking seems like a lot.

I had a gentlehog proxy for me during the SFNOLE ganza, and then ended up winning two myself. I felt bad about sticking my guy with an extra knife, so I asked if he wanted me to help him sell it. Lucky for me, I was able to get him a buyer within 24 hours, and both hogs ended up happy.

I will say this, though: Proxying is an act of trust. I am grateful that I have had offers for proxies from older, well-respected hogs. It makes me feel like I've earned a decent reputation around here. However, it is also a huge responsibility for the buyer, and one needs to be careful not to take it for granted. I'm glad I was able to maintain my rep by not leaving my proxy stuck with an extra SFNOLE, and I believe the gentleman who proxied for me sold the knife to another hog at retail price.

In the end, it's ALL about community. It's one of the reasons I love being around here.

Well put GatMan:thumbup:

Ok, thats it, last time I'm telling someone that in this thread.

....for today at least:p

OK, I've been drinking and can't remember, who was supposed to be my proxy on the Heavy Heart with mags?

Sorry to leave you hanging all these years. :o Even if you've used it, I would be happy to give you the original price, plus a lttle extra for inflation and your trouble.

Everything said in this thread is true!! It is about trust and community and fronting large sums money is hard to do for people you don't know personally ( even if you did know them it would be hard) and the economy sucks to boot. So I do Understand, BUT IT STILL SUCKS, knowing where My Grail MOAB is, and having no way to get even a chance at it. :(:(
Hopefully it will be at Blade Show West:cool::cool:

Maybe meets some fellow HOGS and Get my GRAIL:D:D

That's good to know. It just helps and bolsters the community, and speaks alot about the integrity of folks here.
