I hate to even post this - but did anyone see Man/Woman/Wild - friction fire?

Okay - I am no expert - and I should barely even be talking... but...

If anyone just saw Mr. Hawke and his wife make fire with a Bow Drill?

He had his wife hold the top rock - he used a small stick for a bow - and then proceeded to have some tragic form (fast small strokes - erratic). Then they allowed the spindle simply fly out without care (which almost dispersed the coal) and then had a tragic tinder bundle 'prepared' to put it in.

Okay - okay - he got fire (I think - who knows) and he told how he hates to make fire that way.

We can tell Mr. Hawke... we can tell...

Didn't see it...I've been outside with Alayana most of the day building her club house / swing set thing and worked on it past dark. But now I wish I had seen it, sounds like it was hilarious!

Yeah, it took them four tries. But anyone who can make fire with a stick is doing pretty good in my book.

More important, at least they figured out a way to peel off their clothes at the beginning of the episode.

I totally agree that they GOT fire. I know... I know.... I just work my butt off to get fire and practice a lot. I think in anything but good dry wood in a dry situation and he would not have fire.

Yeah, I'm watching it now TF. I noticed the technique wasn't the best and they really didn't have a very viable tinder bundle. Not sure if anything was edited, but it does show that primative methods are not simple and failure is quite common....

That was my thoughts:D

I'm beginning to think those SAS guys aren't really skilled at friction fire. Here's a quote:

"Do not expect to make a fire instantly (bow and drill); the drill will need to 'bed' itself into the baseboard and this can only be achieved after hours of constant drilling." Page 59 - SAS Encyclopedia of Survival, Barry Davies, Virgin Publishing, 1999, ISBN# 1-85227-866-8

If I had to drill for hours, I wouldn't have to worry about a fire ............:(

Saw it. I liked the two man bow drill thingy. That does seem like it would make it easier. The beginning of the episode was the best part though. :D

Hours?

Hmmm....maybe they are referring to doing it when weak from exhaustion or trying to make a hearth-board from Ipe or something....

You all saw his knife, did you think his bow drill would look better?
:D

Saying his name too fast, watching him making fires, and that sharpened thing he designed is enough to make me chuckle whenever I hear anyone talking about him. At least he got it started....assuming there wasn't some camera magic used.

Kyle.

It is always harder to start a primitive fire when your wife, friends or children are watching. I can only imagine her helping. Still, they did good to not make it seem too easy.

Agree with this. I've failed many, many more times that I have succeeded.

I don't understand. What's so funny about saying (out loud), "I'm surprised it took so long for Myke Hawke to make fire - especially with all the friction involved. What's wrong with Myke Hawke"?

That's not FUNNY!

:D

rip off all the cloth and rub stick wildly and vigorously with assistance of helper.

maybe going the wrong way, but the rating of this show will climb.

I liked the farmer's market spread they had there after gathering food. All that stuff looked really plentiful, so I bet they could have gathered that much by themselves in a short period of time.

I think too many people try to learn something from the show. Do you learn something when you watch 99% of the rest of TV? Think of it as entertainment and you will have a lot better experience. If you do actually learn a new technique, then that is just a bonus.
