You guys are way too fast on the DOTD. I have a couple of noob questions. I been reading on the forum for awhile now but am never fast enough to capture one of the DOTD. Any way I have loved the shape of the kukri since I first saw one when I was about 10 years old. but I never bothered getting one since all I had ever seen was tourist garbage and barely useable.

I recently found the HI section of the forums and fell in love all over again. In the recent DOTD I was smitten by the 18" UB memorial salyan special (1/10 DOTD) as well as the fox folly to a lesser degree. Between the Salyan, and the Fox Folly which would be the better all round knife for a pack/woods/fun tool.

Finally I would like to pay my respects to Uncle Bill and Rusty. From what I see here on the forum they were both rare and great (how unfortunate there arent more like them) people. Few people much less business owners are willing to first do the same work as their employees and second make the effort to so completely connect with their customers. I saw that Uncle Bill had over 32k posts here, and after reading that he would even take trades I was amazed that someone like that existed successfully in todays jaded culture.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Don't be a hater. Do you drink hater-ade? Hey just e-mail Miss Yangdu and see if she's got something she can send you that doesn't require spidey-ish reflexes. Don't think you can go wrong with either knife. I don't have a salyan special, but I can tell you that my FF was my 5th HI khuk and gave m e a feeling like it was my first time. If I wanted an all arounder though, I'd get one of the villager GRS at 16-18" region. Longer than 18" and it feels funny on my belt.

Welcome, Spyderfan, and if you want an all around khuk head for something about 18" long and 28 ounces in weight. The recent FF is too light to be 'all around', though many FF's are heavier and are great choppers. This, is of course just my opinion.

It was nice of you to mention Uncle Bill and Rusty. We still miss them mightily, but are chugging the steam boat down the channel much the same way it always has.

I made my first HI purchase last week...I just got lucky,no one picked up that Chitlangi! ;)

As aproy1101 said just e-mail Mrs.Yangdu and see what she's got;also read the ordering instructions.

If you want, say,a wood handeled WWII or AK just ask nicely-I'm sure you'll find what you want.;)

Of course I dont really Hate you guys. Its my jealousy speaking. I swear some of you must have the new internet I.V. drip service. You snapped up all the deals like a starving arowana. My hope for this knife was that it would do the work of my stolen machete's when I go shooting, camping or other outdoor playing. Other reccomendations are of course welcome as I am a kukri ignoramus at the moment. I also suspect that however the HI virus is transmitted this wont be my last kukri.

We are well conditioned Snarf Sharks....LOL!!!

There are some tricks to being a successful shark.

The specials tend to come around 1030-1130 PST, give or take. Many of the bigger sharks in the aquarium have an email already drafted, with a blank spot for the actual desired special; when the special begins, a simple cut-and-paste of one line and a click on the "Send" button gets the order going in a minimum of time. Due to the vaguaries of the Internet, some emails travel faster than others and you may be beaten by someone who's slower on the draw. AOLers in particular have a huge advantage, as their internal email seems to be nearly instantaneous.

If you haven't already, be sure to read the sticky about how to place an order for a DOTD.

It's customary to leave a post (before or after sending your email) stating that you made a play for that particular piece; it saves unnecessary emails by others.

Good luck on your next purchase.

the dedicated DOD'ers here have cerebral implants that allow them to send yangdu an email a femtosecond after she posts the dod's. us mortals in other time zones have to make do with a lot of coffee, waiting up late and even then can't seem to ever get the one we want.

the hikv is transmitted instantly by contact with any HI product and has been know to start insidiously after exposure to the HI website and/or this forum. drooling seems to have something to do with it

Uncle and Rusty were indeed rare and special people, well loved, and deeply missed by a great many of us. But stick around, you'll come to discover this place is populated with some of the most exceptional folks you'll find anywhere. Don't want to embarass them, so I won't list off their names, really no need to. One I will single out is Aunt Yangdu. Her steadfast courage, tireless effort, and blossoming creativity, have kept Himalayan Imports not only up and running, but moving forward in a way that would have made Uncle and Rusty extremely proud. Give 'em he&& Yangdu  :D

As far as khuks go, if you're new to them, a 15" Ang Khola or British Army Service is a good khuk to cut your teeth on. You'll eventually want a larger khuk for "serious woodworking", but either one of the two mentioned will give good service as a camp/trail knife, and serve as a good introduction to khukuris.

I am still wondering if Yangdu choses the emails based on who mailed first or whose mail she got first. Since the email has a timestamp...

Hate? There are better emotions.

Elation is one- when you get the "Done Deal and Shipping Today. Thanks."

"Allll Rigghhtttt!!!" WooHoo! The tri-box vigil begins.

Worse is when you know who has what, and when a DoD gets sucked up, you say, "C'mon now! So-and-so already HAS 4 BAS's... Why's he need 5!"

Because he's a khukuri addict. Like the one in front of the computer.

Did I say addict? I meant, collector.

The kami's will make more- if you miss one, well. You only get the ones you're supposed to.

Yeah, these guys are fast with the specials.

I've always wondered, though, what does "YBB" stand for?

Welcome Spyderfan:)

Sharking a DOTD is a zen-like art. It takes time and practice and a truck load of luck;) As far as a good all around user goes, Yvsa designed the Foxy to be the ultimate khuk. However, I agree with Munk, 28oz is what you need for a true all 'rounder. I love my little 12" UB Memorial Salyan. I think it would be a great camp knife in it's own right. Although I have not handled the 15 or 18" versions I would say that they would get my vote for a great user khuk. I like the FF, but i just wasn't smitten with it. Uncle Bill and Rusty both liked the WWII model. Rusty, who would mention that he was 5'4 at every change (God rest that great man's soul), was more of a 16.5" WWII fan where as Uncle Bill, I believe, swayed more toward the 18" variation. I really like the 18" WWII and I'm about 5'10 175lb. There was an awesome one up for grabs a few days ago. I almost grabbed it, but I already have a really nice one as well as a Yvsa Cherokee Special that I am in love with.
If you're looking for a great starter khuk, then the 15" AK is a great way to go. I got so used to my big boys that when i got a great example of the 15" AK I was a little unimpressed...until I chopped and split with it;) Just yesterday I stood up three 18" long pressure treated 2X6's in a row on my work bench. Basically it was one wall of 6" wood with different grain patterns. My asst. manager said I couldn't make it through in one chop...i didn't think so either. Lined up my swing, took a breath, and KAPOW! The wood splintered into six pieces. It was almost like the boards were fleeing in a panic:cool: I didn't even swing that hard.

Good luck finding your khuk. Actually, khuks tend to find their owners;)

Ah, the good old days. I quit before I hit triple digits. Not everybody can say that.

I'll have to post pix of what I'm collecting now.   :p :D  :p

Saw where you shot for a khuk the other day, Jake, hope you got it.

Welcome aboard spyderfan. Snagging takes a little practice. The tips already given above should should enable you to compete with the best. Good luck!

thanks for the welcome and the advise. when I email Yangdu will I end up paying more for a special request etc? Also do the full tang models handle/balance better than the regular handled models? I was reading on the the thread about handle materials. Is cracking a common issue as well as needing to refinish or treat the wood? Which will stand up to moisture (I live in oregon) better?

You might not pay more for a request. I once let Yangdu know how disappointed I was to miss a particular YBB item and she offered another at the same price. Depends on what is available and, in my case, maybe a little Christmas spirit.

I bought full tang khukuris initially because they are definitely tougher, but I think the standard handle distibutes the weight you carry more optimally for chopping. I have some of both and am still experimenting.

I live in New Mexico and will need to protect my handles due to the dryness. I would guess moisture would be less of a problem unless you're talking about frequent soakings - in that case a good oil finish would probably be a good idea.

Welcome, Spyderdude.

I am an FNG around here too. I got fortunate, and snagged the 12 in BAS for my girlfriend off Tuesday's DOTD.
I ordered a 15 in BAS for me on Monday, by phone, from the website.
I didn't know about the DOTD's till after I had ordered, and started wandering the site. Ah, well, live and learn. I am TOTALLY happy with my 15" BAS, at the reg price. Yangdu, HI, and the Kamis deliver alot of value, as far as I can tell.

I know somehow these won't be the only khukuris I order, from HI.
I think I am bitten as well.

Good luck, young Shark! ;)
