Okay, It's a burner question. I am making a burner for a new forge. Specs are
3/4" tube with 13/16 holes for air(4). 9" long, with a .023 tip. Also have a .030 tip. My problem is, the flame begins about 1" from the tip. This is geting the tube red hot. From my understanding, this should not happen. Granted this test is in open air(not inserted in the forge) and without a flair.
Is this normal, or do you have any sugestions? Thanks in advance, Paul

That's normal for not having the flare. The flare actually slows the velocity at the end to get a better burn. If the flame is blue, good for you :)

Thanks Mark
just to make sure we are on the same page, I mean 1" from the .023 tip, not the end of the burner tube. I'm not sure if that is what you ment.

Whoa, I thought you meant the flame was 1' from the end of the burner. Does it do that at all pressures?

How does it sound when running? Does it chirp? If its chirping and the flame is at the .023 tip I would say you dont have enough velocity through the tip.

Paul,
I think your jet size might be too small. From your description I think you have a burner similar to the Oliver-upwind propane burner. He uses a #57 drill to make his jet. The #57 drill bit is is .0430 inches diameter.
That is in step with info from Ron Reil's site:
"The second item concerns the drill diameters for the jets. The numbered drills refer to a set of drills numbered from 1 to 80. The #1 is the largest, and the #80 the smallest. The jet diameters that you are probably interested in range from a #57 to a #60, but I have included more of the table in case you wish to go beyond that range. The following are conversions to inches for these drill numbers.

#50 = 0.0700"
#51 = 0.0670"
#52 = 0.0635"
#53 = 0.0595"
#54 = 0.0550"
#55 = 0.0520"
#56 = 0.0465"
#57 = 0.0430"
#58 = 0.0420"
#59 = 0.0410"
#60 = 0.0400"
#61 = 0.0390"
#62 = 0.0380"
#63 = 0.0370"
#64 = 0.0360"
#65 = 0.0350"
#66 = 0.0330"
#67 = 0.0320"
#68 = 0.0310"
#69 = 0.0292"
#70 = 0.0280" "

My burner is similar to the Oliver up wind, except I use 9 holes since the jet end of the pipe is closed:

This is what that the flame from it looks like:

Thanks guys. I will try the larger hole and up the pressure. I may also build an upwind for comparison. Ripper, what is that on the end of your burnner tube?

Paul,
It's a flare i made from a piece of tubing. It's since been replaced by a
larger piece of pipe that works as well and is more durable.

Greg
