I know the video for the Sharpmaker recommends a 40 degree angle for sharpening and a 30 degree angle for backbevel (and I can get it to shave paper using this method), but can the D2 steel blade of the Griptilian take and hold a 30 degree edge? Would the effects be noticeable, and would the drawbacks be detrimental?
Thanks.

Unless your D2 grip is now at 30, it would take you forever to back bevel it there on the Sharpmaker. I would use the 40 setting, but to answer your question, yes, the D2 grip would take and hold a 30 degree inclusive edge angle no sweat. If you've got the time go for it. you should end up with a wicked nice slicer:)

Thanks for the info!
Also, I just tried putting a few strokes on the Sharpmaker. It wasn't going far, so I pulled out my old Lansky sharpener with the ultra-course stone, set it flat against one stick and removed the other one. I'll get it down to size on this thing, then I'll lose the ultra course stone and work the Sharpmaker.
Once again, thanks a lot!

I have D2 from Benchmade, Queen, Northwoods and Dozier. I freehand all of it to 11-12 degrees, then touch it up on the Sharpmaker for a secondary bevel at 15 degrees (30 inclusive). It slices like butter and I've never had a problem chipping or rolling edges. I should also add that I use my knives for cutting/slicing, I don't pry or screwdrive with them.
