I have a question for Toohr owners about the stone holders

When holding an Edge Pro style stone do the stone holders contact the bevels on the ends of the stone mount or do they contact the stones? I ask because I got an email from a customer showing the blade holders holding one of my 1"x4" stones, and it was not doing it right. The dovetails in the stone holders were way too big and I am wondering if this is a one-off or common problem.

I've never tried 4" stones on my Toohr #3, but all the 6" Edge Pro style stones I've used with it haven't had any issues.
I'll look more closely at it this evening, when I get off work, and let you know what I find. 🍻

The dovetails on them are HUGE. Where they contact depends on the thickness of the blank they are mounted on. Your customer may need to use a spacer of some kind under the stones so they are held correctly.

Bdtry, your photo with the 3mm blank is what I was worried about. If you tried holding a stone on a 1/8" thick blank I think you would hit the stone before the angled face on the blank.

Well, the first pic is one that is 0.115" thick according to my calipers, so I guess it would depend how close the stone edge is to the end. The person could either put a couple layers of masking tape on the stone holders to act as a spacer, or file back the edge of the dovetail so it won't be as close.

Large dovetails on mine as well.

The two pics below are of a PDT Metallic Bonded CBN stone, on a 3mm blank.
The abrasive is undersized, compared to an Edge Pro stone, so the edge of the dovetail doesn't make contact.

The two pics below are of an Edge Pro Diamond Matrix stone, on a 5mm blank.
The abrasive sits on a slightly raised portion of the blank, and the edge of the dovetail contacts this raised portion, fortunately.
You can also see that the bevels of the blank and the stone holder don't touch.

The solution is in fact very simple. All you need is some sort of a spacer of proper size and thickness (let's say 2 or 2.5 milimeters thick) to put it between a stone holder and a stone.
Where to put this spacer? Check the red arrow on the photo from the link.
How to fix the spacer? Double sided tape.
-Someone not so handy could use something already mad and don't need cutting to proper size and grinding to proper thickness - a screw washer, coin, piece of plastic or whatever
-Someone more handy could cut himself piece of proper size from brass or aluminium

Do I fix the spacer on the stone holder or on those stones with 3mm thick blanks?
I would say on stone holders. I suspect the holders will still hold the stones with 5mm thick blanks just fine.

I agree, but honestly, it's not an issue for me.
I've never used the EP Diamond Matrix stones on this sharpener, nor intend to.
I have a few other higher quality sharpeners I use them with.
I was simply providing the comparative information D Diemaker asked for. 🍻

jeronimo, thank you for your posts. From the stone holders on 3 different sharpeners I have seen so far they are consistent. I do wonder why Toohr did the clearance for the point of the dovetail. It shouldn't be needed and is a lot more work than cutting the female dovetail like everyone else does.

IIRC the included stones on a plastic mount are pretty thick so it isn't an issue on those stones, and some of the plastic mounted diamond plates come on even thicker mount. Unfortunately this is the only picture I have, I threw them out shortly after receiving them.
