:o I woke up and discovered that I have a rash on both legs just up to my knees. Little red pin head sized marks all over my shins and calves. No sign of insects, but I have started to wear shorts on the golf course and I have wandered into the wild grass on occasion over the last two weeks. It is clearly an allergic reaction to something(s). If it remains localized do I need to worry? I just put some Benadryl anti-itch gel on it (AI isDiphenhydramine). The last time I had a rash it was because of an antibiotic and it was on my torso, like twenty years ago. It looks the same. Help, please. :)

I would agree. A quick trip to the doctor or even a clinic could get you fixed up.

A 2 minute search of your brief description brought up scabies. They can live in tall grass.

I'd get it checked out if it were me.

Good luck

I appreciate the posts, guys. It is relatively minor and I won't go see anybody unless it gets worse. Maybe some Benadryl tonight before I crash. It looks a little like the smaller more red colored marks in pics 3 and four of your link, John. No raised bumps or swelling and, though I've been scratching my lower legs with the toes of my shoes (on the opposite leg) for about a day and a half there is no itching at all now really. Sometimes a rash can be a very serious symptom. If it gets worse I will make an appointment to see Mongo. :D Off to tee it up. :)

This morning it's still visible but 100% better and definitely clearing up. I didn't even take the anti-histamine. What concerns me now is what caused it to begin with. I went out on Sunday with my dad to watch the Nationwide Tour golf event at UMCP and I had a pretty awful tasting crabcake sandwich for lunch. I went to a catered HS graduation party for some friend's daughter and ate some really good Mexican style food that night. I applied some insect repellent and some sunscreen on Sunday. I'm dumbfounded. Maybe something I ate. Thanks for the help, though.

Nope. I know poison ivy like the back of my hand. It was an allergic reaction to something. No doubt in my mind.

DT, there might have been some type of chemical treatment that was sprayed into the grass that caused your reaction. If it is clearing up, I would just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't spread north of the shins . . . .
I have been using a remedy my grandmother put on me a "few" years back for poison ivy, chiggers, etc., & before everyone starts laughing, trust me, this stuff works better than any lotion or ointment you can buy. Next time you get something like this, take some good ole' white shoe polish and cover the area. I"m telling you this stuff works. How, I have no clue, it just does.
Hope it clears up with no lasting effects.
Be safe.

Chiggers?
I forgot your regionality, but chiggers I hear are not fun.

Could there have been stinging nettles or some similar plant mixed in with the grass? I hate those things. Never knew what they were until I got stung all over my arms. I learned what they were and what they looked like really quickly after that.

I went to a DE beach for Memorial Day. On Memorial Day before playing 18 holes at a very nice course I waded out into a small bay right out in front of the house where we stayed. I walked out about 100 feet or so right up to the bottom of my bathing suit which came down to the top of my knee caps. This was one week before I noticed the rash. The water by the shore had to be in the mid-80s. I think it was something in the water, algae or some type of zooplankton or something. This had completely slipped my mind until this morning. Anyway, the rash has all but disappeared and went right up to but never passed the level where I walked into the water. I'm thinking this has to be it. I'm just not sure what 'it' actually was.

Two or three years ago I deeply scratched my leg when I ran into a stubby branch on a fallen tree trunk. I was wearing shorts. I never covered or even cleaned the wound. About five or six days later it started getting red. I went to the docs and got some antibiotics for it. It cleared up, started to heal and started to scab. About a month or month and a half later it began itching and I started getting little raised red bumps on the entire shin area. I occasionally relieved the itching and bumpiness with tea tree oil. But it would always come back. Then, one day, after about 6 or 7 months, it just went away for good.

If your itchiness persists, I recommend tea tree oil applied to the affected area once or twice a day.
