I have a really nice katana but the tang is stamped "Spain." Is it still a Japanese Sword? I always wondered about that - just to pick nits. It's very sharp and I've cut through small saplings and stuff with it easily.

There was a "period," I'm told, when Spanish swords were considered among the best. :)

This works best as its own thread in the Sword Discussion forum, moved from the Yoshindo Yoshihara thread.

it's a "japanese style sword" and is still a katana if thats what your asking.

to be called nihonto, it must be made in japan. As long as you think it's nice, thats all that really matters ?:)

I won it in a big martial arts raffle in our area. It's probably a cheap POS but maybe not. It was 1st prize and it does cut well. I don't have a real Japanese one to compare to - but I'm okay with it. Our karate style doesn't use a sword but rather weapons to defend against one, so I never really got into them. Thanks. :)

Marto of Spain used to make some nice stainless steel katana. In fact, it was their swords that were used as the "beauty pieces" for Highlander the Series. Usually the Marto handles are made of ABS plastic and are wrapped in cotton, though I haven't seen any of their latest offerings.

But regardless, it's something you won, so congratulations!

just let me add, that being it's probably stainless steel I wouldn't cut anything with it anymore. Stainless is great for knives but in sword leingths it's rather brittle and there's a good chance you could seriously get hurt.

Like the guy in the infomercial who whacks the decorative katana and it breaks and stabs him in the gut? :D

I think it's probably is like that. It looks chrome plated and not like real katanas I've seen online at import websites.

It's mothballed.

Man! If I'm ever attacked by dead pigs, bamboo, a cow skull, some cheap luan paneling, or an Asian guy who wants to do some chinups, I sure hope I have MY greatsword on me!

"it extremely well balanced, and easily weilded of people of large stature and physical streingth"

My favorite was the meat filled boots. :)

That was a particularly nice touch to the video. Last words at the end. "Buy my great sword, you'll praise my name! "

I went to church yesterday but we didn't talk about Lynn. :)

In all fairness it would sure open you up if it hit you. His #1 man, the big guy who's been demo'ing for him since the beginning is strong and swings it pretty fast. Lynn gave him a new tricked out Camaro here recently at some big CS event for years of service. He's a heck of a stabber and cutter!

I think I caught a second of Andrew Demko in there somewhere running & stabbing - (I watched it again last night.)
