I have an idea for grips

I was thinking about it, wouldn't it be cool if someone made nomex grips for all of the Beckers?

Sh@rp did some G10 ones for the Eskabar a while back. I didn't get my hands on a set, but I bet they're amazing. I was talking with him at the time, and I believe I remember him saying it's very difficult and expensive to get G10 that thick. Even for the Eskabar, so I could only imagine how bad it would be for a BK2 or something. I think G10 is great, but I would rather stick to micarta or grivory for the larger blades simply because of price and it being easy. If you're really interested though, I have seen Gavko do scales in G10 for a BK2.

OT, I'm not really sure what nomex is, but if it hasn't been done already it probably can't be done. Lol, these guys around here are absolutely mod-crazy.

It will be a new hybrid micarta that will be a fusion of Nomex. Not having the average fibers by themselves but that and a combination of nomex...it's possible, I'm just throwing it out to you...trust me, it's going to revolutionize knife grips a little later on.

Nomex would be neat. The grip would be insane. But that would likely make the scales 3x the price of the knife.

well, I'm not sure what nomex gets you that G10 doesn't.
Nomex is a fabric... you'd need to turn it into a solid, which means some kind of binder/glue.
The binder would be the weak link as far as heat is concerned (which is why nomex is cool, right?).
G10 is glass fibers. Glass is pretty good to about 2000F, at which point you might... have to let go?
Yes, I think Nomex micarta would be awesome. Would it have any advantage other than cool factor? ehh...

I have a big piece of G10 I would consider using for tweener scales. Gotta use that stuff up - I hate the dust. It's maybe 1/4" thick. Not good for full-size Becker handles, for for a 5/32" tweener? sweetness.

G10 on folders is usually thin and textured.
G10 shaped onto a handle and polished looks like carbon fiber, but DENSE. Totally different animal. Oh yeah, and that smooth surface gets grippier (yes, it's a word in this context!) when it's wet.

jade grips :)

with an LED inside...

cuz jade is fireproof, and translucent :)

Nomex is a specific type of material. Its designed to melt and close off the pores of the material, once it reaches a certain temp, or is hit with direct flame.

I have looked into finding a material to make a knife handle out of, as I work with a couple of volunteer fire departments and first responders, on gear and training. It doesn't exist. At least from what we have seen, it needs to be either steel, or asbestos to stand up to what fireman do.

Firesuits need to be replaced at regular intervals, so getting nomex wouldn't be that hard. I think it would act like any other "synthetic" material that is turned into micarta.

I will say this, you better wear full face and have a seperate O2 feed to it, if you are going to render nomex airborne, though. That shit will kill you if you breath it.

I think burlap or canvas micarta is still the best.
