I Have Been Spoiled

After carrying the ESEE HEST DPx fixed blade for a couple of weeks, I have decided that I don't like any of my folders as much any more...nothing else seems as solid.

Sure, I still love my Ritter Grip, and my Military, and my Rajah I (especially that one - it might feel just as solid), and all the others, but this ESEE has a level of solidity and reassuring feel in the hand that I haven't encounter in the small fixed blade EDC market.

Now in every new knife I'm expecting this level of solidity - I'm afraid that I might've been spoiled and will just end up disappointed.

Just wanted to pass along my positive experience to those on the forums. Thanks, ESEE, for making one heck of a product that I can depend on.

God bless.

KATN,

Wade

Wade,

I feel for you. I've an Izula and H.E.S.T. I no longer appreciate my folders as much. It is entirely possible that I will simply move to carrying fixed blades at this point. The Izula is a wonderful knife. I may get an Izy II, but I don't know. The original is a wonderful little blade. Enjoy the new world of small functional and rock-solid fixed blades.

God bless,
Adam

Completely different animal. Not only does the HEST set the standard for high performance and practical EDC, but also survival knives in general, including many much larger than it. I still think it's the highest performance, taking size and weight into aspect, than any other knife I own. A true survival knife if there ever was one.

I know what you mean about the HEST, it really has a way of spoiling you. So far the only folding blades that I've used that can come close to matching how solid it is are the Zero Tolerance line, I occasionally still carry a ZT 0350. When the area I'm in allows me to though I always have my HEST, or sometimes my Izula.

*From what I've heard there's a titanium version of the HEST in the works along with the larger version of the HEST, I "think" it's called the Hostile Environment Fighting Tool. Now I can't wait to get my hands on both of those!!! :D

I got one finally got one, it came yesterday.

I wholeheartedly agree with the thoughts expressed in this thread.

Incidentally, i prefer it's handle to that of the ESEE-3 by a HUGE margin.

Other than my SAK I keep with my keys, I have gone to my HEST in my EDC bag and when I don't have my bag with me, my IZULA is in my pocket. I just like the fixed bades better. I don't think it just a preference or choice. The ESEE fixed blades are just a great EDC option.

I hear you. I seldom carry my folders anymore, it's either the HEST or Izula for the most part. With the HEST I'm also willing to do things with it, that I'd never do with a folder because they'd likely break. It's like a mini prybar with a razor sharp edge. Handy as hell out in the country.

Only thing I would change about the HEST is I'd rather the blade came to an unsharpened end before the wire break.

My only wish is that the HEST came with a Teklok in addition to the paracord and MOLLE system. I would find a Teklok very convenient and just purchased one seperately; for my purposes this Blade-Tech Teklok is much more useful than their MOLLE locks.

While I don't have much use for the bottle opener, its presence doesn't bother me on the knife. I don't typically use bottle openers, and it is redundant as I carry a Victorinox Hiker in my pocket most of the time, but it doesn't hurt anything.

Just a fine design that doesn't leave much to be desired.

There is no doubt a fixed blade is stronger and more simple. BUT folders have there place. Truth is my slightly larger Emerson 15(as compared to my Izula) really did everything the Izula did.

With that said I think the new HEST folder will be impressive.

Folders do have there place, for sure. I'd be hard pressed to find a fixed blade with the blade length and weight of a Spyderco Military that can be concealed with such effectiveness.

The HEST folder should be really impressive. I'm sure that ESEE will make the HEST folder a folding knife design with the solidity its knives are known for, making it to be a folder to have for sure!

Izula did it for me. Now I've been buying fixed blades almost exclusively, but i still carry folders daily for lighter-duty work. Just means i EDC 2 blades now, fixed and folding, OH NO.

You can typically find MORE than two on me. What can I say, I like my knives? :D

Today the HEST is on the belt, with a Benchmade Ritter Grip (RSK Mk1) in the right hip pocket, and a Victorinox Hiker in the right watch pocket. A Leatherman Micra is also hanging from my keychain at the moment. I also have a Crawford Knives credit card knife tucked away in the wallet.

No, I'm not in the wilderness, but these bulkier winter clothes let me carry more without feeling too weighed down - I'll take advantage of it while I can, and before I get sick of having my pockets packed! Soon the Ritter and Hiker will return to their place in my SwissGear laptop bag, which I carry around everywhere anyways.

I have developed a new appreciation for fixed-blade knives. I've always bought (collected/accumulated) and carried folding knives for the convenience of that form-factor. I have had a fixed blade knife for deer hunting, and another one for SHTF/Survival requirements, but that's really about it. Neither were suitable for every day use in the great outdoors.

I bought my ESEE blades after deciding that a fixed-blade is a requirement for all walks in the woods (hiking, hunting, ATVing etc...). Being stuck in a tight spot while hiking in the backwoods or ATVing even further back in the woods, with only a SAK or folding knife is no longer an option.

Nothing beats the strength and solidity of a fixed-blade.

Maybe I'm weird, but I prefer the handle on the 3 to the HEST's.

Kyle

EDIT: Congratulations on the knife, though. I do think it is a very nice, stout knife for EDC.
