Went to Reno to see the Doctor and do some trading. Meant to show up at the cantina and swipe at least one blade out from under y'all.

Instead ( I'm so ashamed ) I ended up with a post-war Fairbairn-Sykes. Unsharpened, which won't last long. I will take precautions to cover all but the edges while sharpening.

It's not a Randall #2 or Bauchop Alley Cat, but it's still a classic.

Oh, and the doc wants me back in two months when he plans to cut me open and take out the screw in the ankle. Says it's fine and start walking on it ( wearing an orthopedic boot ) as tolerated. And don't tolerate much.

Good to hear that you're on the mend, Rusty.

Any chance you could post pix of the Fairbairn/Sykes?

Thanks,

Harry

Don't feel bad about it Rusty. I've been contemplating some "survival" blades for a while now, and they all run around the RTAK/TOPS styles. I have been, and will be, unfaithful to true khukdom. But at last I can also truly say, I don't have HIKV any more. Sure, I'll get a couple more khuks at some point (maybe even a katana!), but what and when I don't know. Right now, I just hang out here to talk to great people, and give Jimmy a hard time

Tom, I think we will believe you when you say you don't have HIKV, BUT the first time you use the word "research" we will start to worry about you

Watch out for those S-F knives, Rusty...they made 'em HARD, but brittle as peanut brittle. They'll take a whangin' good edge, but don't expect to pry up a champagne cork with one without breaking off the point! I did this or something similar more than once.
I had three of these in sucession during the '50's. All broad-arrow marked military issue. Saved my butt with one once (maybe twice.)
Of the type, I much prefer my Gerber Mark 1, or the Al Mar Fang, both of which have had lots of use, and are still in one piece.
The S-F does have a high intimidation factor, though. I walked through a cloud of bad dudes once with one in my hand and no one lifted a finger to try to stop me. Says something, I guess.

Research...don't get me started...last show I was at, and Jim was there...Oh, did I ever get an earful.

Uncle:
I made it down to the Mexican market on Kietzke and Gentry way, and was going to come by, but by then it was 5:20pm, and I move slow and the leg was wimping out. Then I again couldn't find you phone # even to just call. *&&$%@#***! And I had more rushed shopping to do.

Ken:
This has no markings other than Sheffield England on the top of the guard. The handle is black cast metal with a coppery color underneath the paint(?) and the end piece screwed to the tang (skull creusher? nah, too rounded) looks more yellow/gold color. The blade seems to be blued til you get it into the sun. then there seems a bronze tinge to it. The scabbard has a snap at the very top, but otherwise is 3 layers of leather on top of each other and has no chape.

I paid $60 for it cause it said Sheffield, was mint unshapened, and looked of good quality. If it's a fake, it's a good one. I have a Blackjack clone of a Randall #1. 'd love to have an original, but for the price I'm happy.

Don't feel bad Rusty, without sampling other blades you do not really know what is good and what is not. Glad you are healing.

Will

This coming unsharpened reminds me of a comment by Jeff Cooper ( aka father of modern pistolcraft ).

It seems that Wilkinson still makes the Commando knife for gift/award purposes. You can get it either sharpened or with a "presentation" ( dull enough that it won't cut softened butter ) edge so the presentee doesn't bleed all over the podium.

Cooper's cogent comment was that "...if you can't trust the guy with a sharp knife, why give it to him in the first place?

Seems to be worth consideration to me.

And speaking of sharp little Bro, how are you doing with the strops?

Yvsa.

"VEGETARIAN".............
Indin word for lousy hunter.

Fairbairn not ready for strops yet. Even then, need to wait til get good and proper ( well, actually a very bad, mean, and nasty ) attitude to do that. This one is for hospital supplies, if you understand.

Just don't fall asloeep while stropping! Who knows what you'll lose then...

TomF: you need to reread my post immediately before yours. No chance of me falling asleep - want to savor every bit of bile.
