I've finally done it.

Last Friday, I sent in my registration to attend the Bill Moran Forging & Knife Exhibition being put on by the ABS in Frederick, Maryland in October.

After talking with Jan last night I realized "What have I got myself into?"

:D

I'm thinking I want to be able to be as prepared as possible. What do you guys recommend?

What can I do to in the meantime? I'm going crazy now that I know I'm going.

I still can't believe I live only 30 minutes away from Bill Moran and Jay Hendrickson. They'll have to hire a set of hounds to keep me away now.

Sorry for the spouting, I just can't get over it.

Are the demonstrations "hands-on" or just "sit and watch"? If hands-on, do I bring my own tools/steel?

I'm sure I'll want to try some of this stuff out immediately, so I don't want to get caught wishing I had brought something with me. Of course, I can only fit so much in my car...

Anybody else here going?

Can't wait...

:D

Jeez! From the look of the thread title I thought ya killed somebody!

Congratulations Dan!

Call and find out if you need to bring anything with you besides the desire to learn(I think you have that covered) and have FUN! Ya lucky bastid.:D

All the best,
Mike U.

You will need a lot! Hmmmmmmmmm, I wonder if we could talk Jessie James into turning an Indian Motorcycle into a mobile forge/grinder.  :footinmou

Having never been I can't say for sure, but I would take along some tools, and some steel just in case. Also saftey gear and other related stuff. Have fun :) -- Charles

Dan I'm jealous! I can't wait to hear your experiences, so please start planning now. :D I always think about your interest in miniatures, maybe you could apply that to your forging efforts too? Anyway, have a blast and let us less fortunates know what it's like! Next thing you know you'll be Mr Moran's new apprentice...better read Ed Fowler's column in October Blade before you go, for inspiration! (Not that you need inspiration, you do sound pretty inspired already. :D )

I'm very, very jealous! Good luck and have fun. I can just imagine a "standard" classroom setting. Dan's going to bring an apple in everyday and sit in the front row. :D

You guys crack me up.

You got that apple part right, though...

:D

I keep running a list through my head of stuff that I should take with me and the only things I have so far are a pair of old tongs and 2 bars of 5160 steel...

Where do I get some good gloves?

Oh yeah...need a hammer too, right?

Do I need an apron?

Somebody help me here, I'm going to go nuts.

:footinmou

Peter, the hell with Jessie James. Thats a cool idea. I have a sidecar hanging around here a coal forge. Run another sprocket off the rear tire to drive the grinder and the blower. I'd be good to go. Have forge will travel.
