No more freezing my but off for the first 1/2 hour or the smell of kerosene permeating the shop. To-day I had a natural gas direct vent wall heater installed in the shop. It cost me $2000.00 but now I havn't got any excuses for staying inside the house. My productivity should go up and it will really save my tools as the heat /cool cycles were really beginning to show on them.

I have my wife to thank for pushing me to make this purchase. Her logic was "Spock-like". No point in buying new tools or machinery that I wouldn't use and that would deteriorate in the unheated shop so just buy the damn thing and make knives with what I had.
Just in time as there is another storm heading in overnight.

Everybody take care and remember....The pointy-end goes to the front!

my heater is called a forge. It brings the temp in the barn up to semicomfortable after about 30mins and it makes steel semipliable enough to bang into knife-like shapes! My texas hold'em pals are somewhat intimidated by the sound and flames shooting out around the firebricks in front though.

Congrats on properly outfitting your shop - wish my wife was as understanding as yours.

Best,

Jim, you made a good investment! ;)

I finally put air conditioning and heat in my shop this year. It keeps all the gizmos running well (especially the oil lubricated machines), and I'm actually getting more work done than ever before. Now, my only complaint is these short 24 hour days. :D

Tom....... I know what you mean about hours in the day being few as are the days in a week. I work full time as a Cop 5 days a week 8:30-4:30,(27 years seniority gets you a cushy day job), plus I drive Transport truck every second week-end. Add in time in the shop and most importantly of all the quality family time and it sure flys by.
Once my daughter goes to bed and my wife is at the computer doing homework for her college courses thats when I hit the shop and the heater will really give me the nudge during the winter months.
I'm heading there now and it's so toasty warm I may have to take a cold brew with me.

Take care all....J.Z. aka Kraut

I try to spend at least one hour per day in my garage/shop doing knife things, though it doesn't always work that way. This coming summer will be my first full summer in south Florida, so I don't know how I'm gonna deal with the heat in the garage/shop yet. I guess I'll close the garage door, open up the house door, and try to pull in a little cool air with a fan. Garages like mine are hard to air condition, especially with a forge in use. I'm trying to build up a stock of forged blades to finish this summer, so I'll only have to fire up the forge for heat treating.

Congrats on the heater! Any leads on a garage AC? :)
