I have joined the black rifle cult...

Cool! Would it be possible to switch the upper to a lighter, less expensive caliber just for plinking and practice and whatnot?

Congrats on the AR, chambered in .50AE it oughtta be a stopper! I'd say you made a good choice in going with 5.56/.223 for your second upper, but you might want to make sure it's chambered for 5.56.

.223 is the civillian version of the 5.56 NATO cartridge and isn't loaded as hot as 5.56 ammo. 5.56 ammo in a .223 can be not good, .223 ammo in a 5.56 chambered gun, perfectly safe.

the 50AE. Always liked that round. Not too much over pressure snap- just the right amount of force and a large heavy object moving down range.

It's not a Cult anymore...more a Colony...a Concensus...a new political party...The AR rifle

Welcome to the BRD club (black rifle disease). Get a 5.56 upper for it, and then a .22LR conversion kit for cheap practice. .22LR won't be as accurate as a dedicated rifle, but it's versatile and tons of fun.

Sounds like a good Alaskan SD rifle.

Here is an article about a .50 16" lever gun. A sturdy 350-grain bullet at 1600 fps won't be the hammer of Thor, but it should do just fine if well applied.

We need to start another Alaskan thread, I reckon. I hear her calling me...

Neato. I want one.

The old 50-70 Government is the true round that settled the west. .50 cal, 425-450 grain boolit, 1200-1300 fps. Knocked all sorts of stuff DRT. A 325 grain boolit at 1800 aught to do the same I reckon. Load it with Barnes X boolits and you might up the penetration factor.

Man, I'm not even a gun guy and I really enjoyed this thread. I'd love to have to carry a rifle along for protection, and being used to it. In Louisianna I didn't really have any predators to worry about. There were some hogs around. And water moccasins. But to have bear to watch for and be cautious about. And need a 45/70. I've been lusting for one for a while. Neato thread bro. Congrats on the gun.

You can get an upper chambered for .458 SOCOM, which is equivalent to standard (i.e. not Buffalo Bore) .45-70 loads.

I watched a show the other day about an AR set up for .50 Beowulf, which I presume is just a slightly longer .50 AE.

I have absolutely no need for such a thumper, but I lust for one also.

I think this has been a pretty cool thread. If for no other reason than the fact that it lured Munk and Spectre into it.:D

In all fairness there's thousands that stomp all over Alaska unarmed. I've even known a few hardcore hikers that wouldn't trouble themselves with a Swiss Army Knife, but....it just don't suit me. I'm rather partial to the idea of being able to take care of myself when I'm a few hundred miles from the nearest trauma unit, ya' know? especially when getting back relies on airplanes, boats, snowmachines, weather, etc.

I used to rarely go out stompin' without a shotgun for snakes when I lived in Georgia. Sometimes I'd shoot 3-4 Mocassins within 50 yards of each other. It's kinda funny actually. I hate snakes, and very much prefer bears.:o

The .50 AE only gives up about 100 fps on average when compared to the .458 SOCOM of the BW. The handload selection is said to be improving with the presence of the .500 S&W. Up here we can get .50 AE ammo at the neighborhood Wal-Mart. a huge advantage living here where shipping ranges from PITA to impossible.

I'm up on the North Slope working for another week. I can't wait to get home and shoot it. I'd absolutely love to go shoot at a blackie with it, but they're pretty much in hibernation now. Can't wait 'till next spring!:D

Thank ye.

Of my choices, moving to teach in Alaska is a well-considered one. I hear some bush communities pay bonuses for teachers who'll come. Of course, I'm also considering (again) commissioning.

Moccasins are about the only US snake I hate, incidentally.

Alaska is the greatest place in the world IMHO. I moved there from Georgia back in '91 and never looked back:D Of course, ask my opinion in a month or two when I'm freezing my appendages off in a -100 windchill up on the slope...

Those bush communities that pay more.....uhmmm.....be very, very careful. The villages can be like a third world country, and some of them still aren't at all fond of non-natives. I'll try not to go on a rant here, but some of those little villages have some pretty dark awful stuff goin' on.

But on the other hand....Wasilla, Palmer, even Talkeetna, Glennallen, the penninsula....lots and lots of great places.

I'm a Wasilla/Palmer resident myself, but if you ever want to talk Alaska, or if I can help ya' out with information drop me an email at mkjray@mtaonline.net

Ironically, I'm departing the Black Rifle Cult... My Jeep cries for more parts, my "go to" gun collection cries out for more ammo, repairs, and upgrades. Oh well, cool toys come and they go.....
