Greetings,

Caught the fever I suppose. Got a cheap $8 sale Smith & Wesson knife from Big5 about a year ago. Was a happy user of the folding 3.5"ish tactical CE, and luckily I found this forum where I proceeded to drool over unobtainable metal (beginning college at time and had no money). Flash forward a year or so, throw in a side of airport security, a summer job, and I'm back...with no knife and a slow swelling wallet. My approach would be different this time however; I would be well researched (Big5 run was impromptu and my first knife purchase ever actually), and have a comfortable 3 month multi-knife plan. So starting yesterday on a beautiful day, I somehow ended up inside on my couch reading and searching (rinse and repeat) until I fell asleep...

My first goal? Slowly fill out a solid EDC collection. This to me means that while I am at work, messing around house, going out, working on projects in the garage, etc., I would be able to comfortably carry one knife (simple pocket guy here). The more I read, the more I realized there really isn't one knife that satisfied all my wants...so I decided to attack the lightweight-front-pocket-forget-its-there-yet-still-dependable category first. Bouncing around Spyderco, Benchmade, Fallkniven, Emerson, Burger, Kershaw, among others I settled on the REI BM530 PE:

I like the weight, S30v, smurf blue, thin (able to carry it with slacks = awesome), good lock, good looks, and it forced me to get a $20 REI membership (20% off for members ending today gave me a net savings of $4 overall)...so I kind of see it as a gift that keeps on giving. It is a little more expensive than my original budget, but for some reason it just felt right to go with the BM as a first EDC purchase.

My next move? Spyderco Para-military 2. Fills out the more-robust-yet-still-classy-streamlined-and-EDC'able category. I was actually about to find a Para-military to buy as my first, but after stumbling upon the slightly refined and larger para2, I "saw the light" and knew a BM530 + Para2 in rotation would be a better all around lineup for my needs. Until the release and proper accumulation of funds, I will be honing my sharpening and maintenance skills with some S30v BM goodness .

Anyways, just wanted to introduce myself with a purchase, thank you guys for some great reading, and will post my impressions as I start tumbling head first down the knife collecting slope.

Cheers

good choice, looks like a pretty solid edc knife, and yea, ill be getting a Paramilitary 2 also, Spyderco is a great and solid knife co.
