get a bunch of tinder, roll it up like a cigar, and put it in the center of the reflector. point it at the sun, and focus all the light you can onto the tinder bundle, hold it steady, and you should see smoke pretty quick. took me a couple trys, i kept getting ahead of myself. you want a pretty good coal before you remove it.

after a few attempts, and a few lungfuls of smoke, success!

its so simple, its stupid, as some wild man would say.

i have never seen or read about that before. did you see any noticeable deformations on the reflector afterwords?

nope, reflector's still fine. i suppose you could get the coal too big, though.

saw it on a couple of survival shows, and seen the bottom of a soda can used... don't know why it never crossed my mind to try a maglite until yesterday...

That really does seem so simple it's stupid.

Also, you made fire without help from Wilson?

That's really cool, yet another in the list of reasons I need to get another mag light.

I was studying my headlights earlier today after seeing Dave use one on Dual Survival last night. (yeah, I watched it on the computer...seldom watch t.v.)

Awesome, good to know otis, an I got a large old maglite in my truck that i just replaced with a smaller brighter light...... heck..., :D look for a new thread soon.

Very cool - it's one thing to see something in a book, online or TV and say "clever, looks easy" and never learn how to really do it.

Practical exercise is the ONLY way to be certain that you can do something.

Same page Otis-over the weekend I was playing around with one of those plastic magnifying cards from going gear. Got smoke but couldn't quite get fire. More practice today I guess. :) Of course when I got fed up I took out the ESEE fire kit and 1 strike and fire.

Ok lets not go crazy, he watched TV and tried it himself.

+1 for doing it himself but im sure hes not trying to make it his discovery?

nope - Otis said he saw it on "several survival shows"...somebody would have to be a real nut job to say they invented it...which didn't happen.

That a cool tip, I saw something like his on Dual Survivor the other night. I'm gonna have to give it a try. :) It could come in handy sometime.
