I know this don't look like much, but it was a pretty big deal for me. I made the jig (with some help from J...thanks J!), made the parallells holding the jig up, and FINALLY did my first milled shoulders. Slotted a gaurd later, and it actually goes together pretty good. My technique is still about 36 grit, but i've got my toes wet so to speak.

Pretty cool buzz using that machine, idn't it???? Happy for you, Ed! :)

Cool deal Ed! :D

Question though, how are you going to flip the blade over and mill the other shoulder and have it perfectly in line with the first shoulder? You can use indexing methods for that, but I'm not seeing anything in that department.

Just curious :)

MUAHAHAHAHA! ;)

I do mine flat, clamping the blade to the table with a RCH overhang of the shoulders-to-be. Mill one side then raise the head, scoot the slide over and climb mill the other shoulder. Probably not the right way, but it works and the mill hasn't laffed at me and called me a girlyman yet! :D This does leave radiused shoulders, though, so if you're not into that, ignore this...... ;)

Fitzo-

The few times I used I mill for putting in guard shoulders, that's exactly how I did it.

I've seen indexing fixtures that allow you to rotate the blade around and clamp down/mill all 4 sides of the blade. It seems to me you'd need something of that nature to flip the blade from top to bottom to get everything lined up.

But I don't know much about milling, and I don't know exactly what's going on with Ed's fixture there.

Bea'n a small town, ignant type... I'sa just use me a file yand a jig to kut myne in ;)

-Nick- :)

Nick, I had the same question. Called J after I did the first shoulder going "Now what the hell do I do?". His vise is bigger and he just starts with the left side of the fixture flush with the left side of the vise, then just flip and make sure its flush again. I just did the same only with the right side of the vise.....Seemed to work OK.

Thanks for all the support guys. Felt like I was never going to get to actually use this thing......

if'n that thar worky for you, Nick, thn em are good! :D

Makes good sense Ed. A cool method!! :) Thanks for sharing.

Okay, thanks Ed :)

The fixture I saw that worked best had a lip all the way around it. That way you could but the lip up against the vice jaws.

I think Fitzo's method is the best way to make sure you'll be in a straight line from top to bottom... BUT! There are always many ways to skin that cat :D
