Well I think everybody, or at least most of you have posted pictures of your PSK. Well, I felt left out, so I bought a camera, made a PSK and I'm damn well going to post it.

ForPhotobucket1.jpg

In the first picture (with the obligatory knives) you see 2 jute pouches, one with a PSK inside and one with it on top. The number 1 refers to the first survival feature. It is a small aluminum container that has a couple of layers of duct tape front and back (that can be used to attach, bind or seal). It is also sealed with duct tape to make it water proof/repellant. #2 refers to the jute pouch. It is made up of approximately 110 feet of jute, which can be unraveled (as easy as daisy chain after the first row or two) and used for fishing line, bow drill cord, tying things together, etc., and of course, as tinder.

In this next picture, you see the PSK with the lid removed. You will notice everything fits in there pretty well.

Picture 3 - this is a breakdown of the actual components in the kit.
3- waterproof aluminum container in which is:
4- a rare earth magnet which functions as a compass. It is placed on a leaf, piece of
wood, etc., and floated. It will align itself with magnetic north/south.
5- tinder (dry cotton)
6- standard lighter flints which fit into -
7- modified Coghlan's lantern lighter which can light pretty well anything that can be
lit with a firesteel and can be used one handed to boot.
8- mini firestraws
9- leather awl needle that can be mounted in piece of wood for use
10- 3 various sized fish (or any other critter you fancy) hooks
11- cotton cosmetic pad for tinder and to prevent items from rattling in container
12- 19 feet of cordage (material unknown but strong and I use this for making poacher's
nets [and before anybody gets too excited about this, it's just a name for this style of
net])
13- 3 safety pins to hold your clothes together or used as a gang hook
14- LED micro light to find the mix for your whisky in case it's dark out.
15- 15 feet of brass snare wire for obvious use or tying things together, etc.
16- an American dime for size comparison only

Now in case you think that the mini firestraws are ineffective:

minifirestrawburning.jpg

Burnt for approximately 1-1/2 - 2 minutes.

I make my firestraws a little different that most people. I use a wound irrigater (?) to
irrigaterwithPJ.jpg

inject the petroleum jelly into the straw. First I put in some cotton, then some pj, some more cotton, more pj, and lastly some more cotton. I put cotton in last to help clean the pj away from the end of the straw to make the sealing a little less messy. Hopefully, you can see in the following picture, how this is set up.

So anyway, now that I too, have posted my PSK, a wave of relief washes over me :) and I shall return to the shadows (at least for awhile).(It's surprising how flowery your speech gets with the help of a little rye and coke :( )

I always enjoy your pics of things you've made. The woven pouch is cool Doc. I keep thinking I'm going to have to try my hand at making a net bag like the one you've shown with the Nalgene bottle in it, looks like too handy a skill not to have at least some knowledge of. Thanks!

Doc,
Very cool PSK  Thanks for buying camara and sharing. A one handed fire starter is very important, thanks for reminding us of that.

Hey Doc....

Nice job..
Question for you..

That certainly is an interesting way of getting the PJ in there..

No..

Do you use liquified or warmed PJ and then inject it into the straw ?

Going to have to try that for sure.. Now to find my syringes...

Thanks everyone, for the kind words.

troutfisher13111 Nice kit! The jute pouches are very original. Are they something you came up with yourself?

Yes. The idea started with these small hand cream cans my wife buys. 3" in diameter and 5/8" thick. I made them so you kind of have to force the can into the pouch (won't fall out readily). I also envision stitching up the rest of the pouch, once the can is in, to prevent playing with the contents and finding out something's missing when you need it.

Normark: Do you use liquified or warmed PJ and then inject it into the straw ?

No Eric. I just used the Vaseline as it comes out of the jar.

Myakka: A one handed fire starter is very important, thanks for reminding us of that.

So is finding your mix in the dark!

Great kit and pictures Doc. I always appreciate the humor too !

Rye makes thee wax poetic eh ?

Hi Doc if you dont mind me asking when you are using the magnet. Does it show N or S or you just have to figure it out on your own which way it shows as it would show either way?? Wont it be better to carry a small campass. Like everyone else i love how simple your kit is and how well it cover everything you mind need.

Hey Sasha,

I don't mind you or anybody else asking anything they want - that's why we're here.

There's a little red mark on the north end, but even if there wasn't, figuring out north and south is not a problem. I encourage everyone to learn how to determine direction using solar and celestial methods.

There is nothing wrong with carrying a small compass, but the magnet compass is indestructable and tiny enough to take very little room in the PSK. It also comes with the aluminum capsule in which I can store some more cotton and spare flints for the lantern lighter, besides, hopefully I'll never have to use it . It also has the benefit if I drop it in the water, I can tie my knife to a cord (in the kit), lower it down in the water and fish the magnet out of the water (because it will stick to the knife - it is a magnet, after all.)

bikermikearchery Very well thought out. I really like the jute pouches.
How were the pouches made?

They were crocheted so that they would unravel easily and provide long lengths of usable cordage. I guess I better explain this further before you wonder if I can pee standing up. I make slings, the David and Goliath type. I have a buddy who also makes slings. The slings I most often make have a netted pocket because a buddy of mine used to wax eloquently about slings with netted pockets he used to use as a kid. In order to make them more distinct, my sling making buddy and I decided it would be good to be able to create a design in the pocket, something like a spider in a web, and as we were ignorant about how to do this, we thought crocheting would be the trick, so I am learning how to crochet. In learning, I found out what a fantastic use of fibre, crocheting is. You can make just about any kind of item you want and all you need is cordage (which you can make from many plants and trees) and a hook (which you can make from bone or wood), and yes, traditionally, I know this is a chick thing, but I do whatever works. AND YES, I CAN PEE STANDING UP!

Hix: Rye makes thee wax poetic eh ?

Aye to the rye! :D

Diligence: what I really want to know is, "why are you ruining the rye, by using mix?"....

61 year old stomach :( .

And thanks all for the kind words.

I'm just now making a kit myself and have a pretty good start but I'm on the look out for new ideas. One thing I would like is a one hand fire starter so could you go into more detail about how modified...the 'modified' lanter lighter is. Great idea.:)

Hey Shotgun,

CoghlansLanternLightermod-2.jpg

Remove the screw thingy that holds in the flint. Remove the screw that holds the twister knob. Remove the sparking wheel and shaft from the brass sleeve. Remove the 2 nuts and mounting bracket. Shorten the brass sleeve to whatever length you want, shorten the shaft of the sparking wheel, remembering to leave some extra to reattach the twister knob. File a 'flat' on the sparking wheel shaft for the twister knob screw, and that's it. Please forgive the adlibbing on the parts terminology as I don't know what they're called. The whole mod is pretty self explanatory, once you jump in. If you have any problems, I can do some drawings and get more specific, but you probably won't need it. I would recommend that you don't shorten the flint/spring tube, though. Plus you need something to hold on to if you're using 2 hands.

Thanks Doc for the answer. I would never accuse any one of being any less masculine for being good at a craft. I do a lot of fiber work my self, started with natural material bow strings, but I have also learned to card weave. I used Jute for my card weaving for a more primitive look. Now that I see how nice those pouches look in jute mite give that a try.
Post a picture of your slings if you will. I'm sure others like me would like to see. I've tried one and I'm a danger to everyone around 360 degrees so I'll stick to my bow.
