I have quite a few Spyderco's and the Manix 2 LW is blowing me away.

So I bought a blue Manix 2 LW the other day and it is blowing me away. I absolutely love this knife and it is the first Spyderco that my wife likes the look of. In fact today I did a IT job at someones home that I have never met....friend of my wife's boss. I set up three PC's and a couple printers and even the homeowner commented on it while I was breaking down the boxes. Asked where he could get one.

Now I know very little of CTS-BD1 steel, but from what I read it holds up to VG-10 and S30V. It held it edge very well and was easy to touch up the the SM and seems to have a good price point.

Anyhow, looks like this has kicked all my faves for EDC for the time being.

I'm not at all trying to burst your bubble, but CTS-BD1 doesn't have the edge retention of S30V. Nothing wrong with it, I have one knife I carry in BD1 and it's not 8Cr13MoV or anything but it's not even VG-10 level. A good attribute of it is the stainless qualities, its one of the most stain resistant steels on the market.

To clarify I'm a fan of BD1 but it's far from the most popular steel around here, I started a thread about it last fall and very few agreed with me it was "decent", actually seemed to be quite a bit of people that straight up don't like it but don't listen to them, it works good enough for what it is and again the stainless properties are almost unmatched.

I like bd1. Edge retention is mediocre but boy will that steel take a wicked edge. Very simple steel to sharpen and to get razor sharp too. I owned the manix LW for awhile. I liked the bd1 just fine and the lock and action were outstanding but I never really warmed up to the handle material. Very nice knife though. Enjoy!!

I've been wondering about that BD1 steel. Thanks for the info on it. I'd been interested in the manix2, but really didn't want another s30v knife, and online searches hadn't told me much about the bd1. I think I'll wait and try to find a sprint run in a unique steel.

I was just going by this article that said BD1 scored a TCC of 570 as per Carpenter, where S30V did a 565

Remember everything you read on the net is real. :D

Lance makes a good point, BD1 does take a wicked edge even with just the most basic sharpening equipment.

What's wrong with 8cr13moV ??? I love it ! Takes a wicked edge very easy and holds it for a pretty decent amount of time. I think it's an underrated steel.

Edit: sorry I was thinking of the 14c28n for some reason :p my bad

Further proving the point that any quality knife steel 8cr13mov and up will work well enough and we should be grateful we have come such a long way in stainless steels in a short time. People in the 70s probably would have thought 8cr13mov was incredible haha.

Manix 2 Lighweight is a sweet knife. US made, just the right size, different, sheeple friendly, and classy blue handles and wire clip, what's not to love for just $75 when most US made knives cost much more? I still prefer my Endura but my Manix 2 sees plenty of use. It's actually taking a vacation in my twin brother's pocket right now. :)

While I would love for Spyderco to produce a Manix 2 LW with an S30V blade, the knife with CTS-BD1 is still one of my favorites. I love the look, love the feel and think that the steel lasts "long enough" for my needs and is easy to put a great edge on when it becomes dull. I have probably bought over 100 knives since I got my Manix LW, some quite a bit more costly with better steel and better build, but the LW somehow finds its way into my pocket more than any other knife I own.

Totally agreed.

My wife now owns a Manix Lightweight blue. The BD1 is pretty darn good steel and takes an amazing edge. I can make it have a better edge than the S30V with the same work. She has been using it all the time. This is what finally made her really want to carry and use a knife!

I love my XL.

Ill agree with that.. Mine is definitely my sharpest and it took little effort on my sharpmaker to get it there

My LW has me so much more exicited for the FRN native 5

That's pretty amazing and you're not the only one I've heard this from.

+1 BD1 may not be the top of the steel food chain, but I love that it sharpens very easily to a VERY sharp edge. This is an extremely easy knife to keep razor sharp.

Love my manix LW in bd1, gets more use than the g10 I have w/ s30v. Nonetheless, I like s30v better than bd1, but BD1 is still quite acceptable. I like it because I have a smaller collection (by BF standards) and I am learning about different steels. I try to buy knives that have different steels so I can learn about them from experience as I use and sharpen them.

Also, with the difference in sharpening, I think it's easier to learn on the softer steels because they are more reactive to each stroke. Harder steels technically aren't more "difficult" but take longer, which increases the chance you become inconsistent with your angles, etc if you are inexperienced. Once you know what your doin tho, it all evens out. Less time to sharpen=less time sharp(softer). More time to sharpen means more time sharp (harder). Since sharpening is just an organized and strategic wearing of a blade, there would be a very close if not perfect correlation of sharpening time to how long an edge can hold under use.

I just ordered a cts-xhp manix 2, and I am very excited. Thankfully its only coming from one state away, so should be here tuesday (maybe monday?! please!). I almost ordered a blue lw, but decided on this one at the last minute.

May I ask from where? I think I could get back onboard with the Manix in a different steel.
