I have been a fan of fixed blades all my life, never was a fan of folders. They just didn't appeal to me. Until yesterday. I knew I had to buy a good EDC folder, and chose between a spyderco wegner, and a benchmade griptillian.

Personally, I didn't like the grip of the tillian much. It felt too cheap (although I KNOW thid is not the case) Also, I admired the wegner ever since I saw an add about it in a gun-nut magazine in 2001. But I never expected a folder of that size to fit comfortably in my small hands. However, it just opened (and in general) felt like a dream. Since I am not a fan of black coating, all factors combined, the Wegner was the obvious choice for me. Especially since the store manager, who is a friend and fellow collector, told me that the line was discontinued.

I just cannot believe what I have been missing all these years, just buying fixed blades only. Next purchase will definantly be a nice auto BM :D It's a whole new world for me. Just thought of sharing this experience with you guys... Nice christmas hollidays to all of you and your families!

(I just heard that I will recieve my shoulder rig for my 2 SOG desert daggers shortly after christmas. Isn't santa the best?)

You made an excellent choice. Actually, if you chose the Griptilian, THAT would have been an excellent choice as well. You couldn't lose with either of those knives. Of course, that's why it's best to handle a new knife before buying. Everyone's hand is different, and a good, comfortable grip is a very personal matter.

You can tell your friend, though, that even though Spyderco has discontinued the Hunter, Tim Wegner is producing it himself, along with the Mouse, at his own company, Blade-Tech.

The now-discontinued Spyde Wegner is one of my all time favorites. I have two.

Thanks for the comments. This purchase has REALLY given me a warm heart towards quality folders. Any opinions about the handle of the griptilian? I just didn't like the feel of it, but it's true: it's a personal thing.
Also, thanks for the link to Wegners own site.

Any advice on my next purchase? I would like a full auto folder, perferably BM, and fit for smaller hands. Pricerange up to $200. And oh yeah, I don't really like black coating, but it's not a big issue.

hoping for some good advice :)

I really like my BM5000 (Presidio: Axis like the grips), but it's kind of big. So for a BM auto for a smaller hand, check the mini Reflex http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BM2550P
I've got one and like it too. The price should be right even w/ shipping to EU.

And if you really want to talk autos, go to the Auto section. There's a lot of guys who know tons over there.

Well, the whole story got a happy ending yesterday. I bought a 2nd hand BM5000s through my knifestore friend (NIB, for 60% retail value)
It appeared that the presidio wasn't too big after all. Actually, I wouldn't settle for a smaller auto.

Thanks for the advice guys, I just cannot stop carrying my new BM.
