I have the worst luck with knives...

I've just received my third knife in a row that has problems. A couple of months ago, I got a Cold Steel Safe Maker II from Amazon that had its edges chipped in multiple places and deformed sheath. A couple of weeks ago I got a Cold Steel Safe Keeper II from Amazon that arrived with a completely blunt tip (almost diving knife blunt...I seriously have screwdrivers that are sharper). And just today, I received a Spyderco Street Beat from Cutlery Shoppe and it's missing its tip. Under light I can see where it's been broken off. It also arrived with black plastic shavings on the blade which seem to be from the sheath, though the knife ships in a cardboard sleeve.

I'm really starting to question this hobby...I'm getting sick of buying knives and then immediately having to return them, especially if it means that I might be out the return shipping costs as well. I know I've probably just had a string of bad luck (especially as far as getting a bad Spyderco is concerned), but it's really making me question if it's worth all the hassle :(

I have never heard of luck that bad! Stay away from black cats, ladders, and mirrors to keep it from getting worse

idk id say try different shops, i know yourcornerstore.com, bladeplay.com, bladeops.com, knifezilla.com, knife-kingdom.com all have good customer service and i have yet to have to return anything

Ive never had anything that bad happen. I did have a nib lg.Skirmish stolen by

someone from USPS. Yes is was insured.

Contact Spyderco (email or phone from their website) and let them have it for a bit. They'll make it right.

The Street Beat is one of my favorite knives. I use mine for butchering deer/elk and a friend carries his 7-365.

As for the CS. Well sux to be you.

That is odd. If memory serves it also ships with a plastic tip quard/protector.
Perhaps you got one that had been returned and was then shipped out by mistake.
Cutlery Shoppe has a pretty good reputation.

I'd guees it's just a run of truly bad luck.
I understand your frustration. It really sucks the joy out of a new purchase to immediately find problems with it.
Only way to avoid it for awhile is to only buy what you can handle in the store. Not an option here in Atlanta, we are knife shop poor to the extreme.

Maybe the Cold Steel blades were fakes? I hear it's not that unusual.

Cutlery Shoppe has not given me any turds.

Reminds me of when I first bought my decent knife - the Benchmade Mini Rukus.

I bought a plain black blade version from 'gizmojoes1'(pretty big knife dealer) on ebay. The guy sends me a combo edge version, so I contact him about it. He lets me know not only do I have to pay for shipping back to him, but he wants to check out that I haven't used it so refuses to send me another one until he gets the one I have back. Extra money spent and time lost and the only mistake I made was buying from him. I at least expected him to cross-ship the right knife.

So I tell him I will send it back, but don't bother exchanging it - just refund my money. If he was going to make things a hassle for me for his fault, I didn't want him to have my business, even if I ended up spending money(shipping cost) with nothing to show for it. Expecting a refund I went ahead and purchased one from another seller to minimize my time not having a knife. Few weeks later what do you know, the correct Mini Rukus arrives in the mail instead of a refund.

Sickened by the guy's business practices, I just decided to not be involved in dealing with him any longer and sold the second myself. I have never since then, and never will, give that guy any more of my money.

On the flip side, I had a eBay seller who I bought a pair of Shure e4 earbuds from, to find out that he had sent me the e3 model. The seller overnights me the correct pair with a return shipping label included for the wrong pair. Now that's service. After that I only went to him for purchasing headphones until he closed shop.

I still have a problem with companies/dealers not checking a product before being shipped out, then forcing the customer to pay for return shipping. Not a good way to make a first impression. They should handle everything with zero cost to the customer. If they don't mess up frequently, it shouldn't be a problem.

Warriors and Wonders in Canada had the best customer service from a dealer I've personally had - when I placed an order for a CQC-13 in satin finish, Jay took the time to notice I had ordered a stonewash/satin CQC-10 from him before and promptly let me know the one he had was the older bead blast finish. He even offered me a big store credit to apologize(though I was already so thankful) if I took the knife.

CRK was the only knife company to ever pay me back for shipping to them for a warranty issue.

Don't be discouraged by the bad luck I say, everyone's been through their share although probably not in such succession and early. I recently got a CS Safe Maker I and it has no problems and never had a problem with Spydercos either.

If all else fails, just buy a Sebenza lol.

amazon it's kinda like ebay. They'll let practically anyone sells stuff there. So, that's not a Cold Steel qc problem.

May also be the same priblem with the spyderco...dealer sucks.

Use only good, reputable knife suppliers and you'll be fine.

For the Cold Steel knives, I bought them directly from Amazon. I avoid marketplace sellers unless it's truly my only option. I doubt Amazon is dealing in fake merchandise. I was able to return both Cold Steel knives for full refunds anyway...it was just a big hassle to get them and then have to immediately return them.

As for the Street Beat, I bought it from cutleryshoppe.com, which comes highly recommended on Bladeforums. I did email the owner and I'm shipping out my return later today, so that matter should be settled as well.

Two SOGs I ordered back in the days from ebay had both tip broken. Makes me wonder if they ever even inspect their merchandise.

If you think their service is good online, you should check them out in person.

Basically the only place I buy knives these days.

There's also another eBay seller named 'caledon' located in Ontario who's very good. He typically has the best prices I ever see for the stuff he carries, States or Canada.

I definitely plan on stopping by W&W if I'm in BC.
