I am off to rehab and won't be back for about 3 hours. I have a katana we just got in that I am going to call a blem mainly because of the scabbard and lack of a habaki. The price will be $145. If anybody wants this before I can post a pix email or call (Yangdu will be here to take the calls).

The scabbard is leather only -- decent enough but not handy to draw from.

Other than these criticisms the katana is pretty decent and I will post a pix when I get back.

See ya later if I can survive the treadmill!

Just out of curiosity, I would think that it might be possible to make a kydex sheath for this katana and then cover that in leather if one wanted to do so.

Ruminating I remain,

Harry

:
You keep on about these katanas I am going to have to get one.

They are looking better each time I see a new pic!!

I know nothng about the katanas, but recall Jim March (I think) saying something about a battle bulge or something near the point. Does these katanas have that?

I have a couple of those not so cheap stainless steel ones and I damn near cut the ball of my thumb off while working the katana over with a file. I do have to say it took a brand new Nicholson file to cut this stainless, but there is no spirit in the blade.
It just feels cold and lifeless.
It is much sharper than it was when I got it, but haven't fooled with the so called "Ninja" model that came with the pair.

Bartender, bring Harry another rum. You can't ruminate on one wing.

Those things are getting nicer with every repetition! I think I must be getting one sometime!
I notice a nice thick tsuba. Steel?
I also can't for the life of me figure out how they can do a 'teapot temper' on a blade that narrow. My understanding is that a lot of hot blade must be available to soak a temper into the quenched blade edge.
I'd really like to see a rigorous and systematic RC hardness test done on HI products, as was done on the khuk from another source in the current issue of Knives Illustrated.

Why thank you, Rusty!

I'll take you up on that the next time I am in Nevada....

The katanas continue to improve. Broken Arrow did an acid etch on the katana he tested and I think this one ended up with Harry. The hamon was perfectly acceptable and the sword cut through the spine of a cow (more than once, I think)and completed a program of severe testing and when I got the it back I could not tell that it had ever been used.

The quality is improving with each shipment but they are toying with the design and that has got to stop. They are supplying a different design each time -- little different tsuba, different handle, different scabbard. We have got to make a stand at some point and I think we are there.

The tsuba is steel and is beautifully engraved on blade side.

I really do like the copper spacers in the handle!

I am saving for the YvsaFC model.

I have decided that I want silver furniture on this one, along wih the horn and bone inlay it should be beautiful!!
I find it strange that both models I have made balance in the area of the cho. The plywood model will balance on a toothpick!!
It will be interesting to see if the finished steel model will balance in the same area. And if it does so it should make one hell of a weapon due to its being almost neutrally balanced.
I just hope the kamis don't take to much artistic license with it.

A tooled scabbard by the new sarki
should round it out just right.
Just handleing the prototype makes me think that this khukuri will be "The" favorite.
